CHAPTER 2: THE MEDAL OF THE LOST

CHAPTER 2: THE MEDAL OF THE LOST

No one spoke.

The only sound inside the ballroom was the baby's soft crying against Maya's shoulder.

Colonel Marcus Vance held the weathered silver medal as though it were made of glass.

His thumb traced the faded insignia again.

Then he closed his eyes.

"I buried this medal twenty-four years ago."

The room froze.

Victoria Sterling forced a brittle smile.

"Colonel... surely you've made some mistake."

Marcus slowly turned.

"I don't make mistakes."

He faced the crowd.

"Twenty-four years ago, a military convoy transporting classified personnel was ambushed outside Blackstone Pass."

Several retired officers in the audience visibly stiffened.

"The attack wasn't reported honestly."

His voice remained calm.

"It couldn't be."

"The commanding officer's infant daughter disappeared."

Gasps rippled through the ballroom.

Marcus looked directly at Maya.

"We searched forests."

"We searched rivers."

"We searched every hospital and orphanage within five states."

"We never found her."

Maya stared at him without blinking.

"My... parents?"

Marcus swallowed.

"Your father was General Nathaniel Vance."

The room erupted.

Not just any officer.

A national hero.

The youngest four-star general in modern military history.

A man whose name decorated academies, memorials, and scholarships.

Victoria's smile vanished.

Marcus continued.

"And your mother was Dr. Eleanor Hayes."

Another wave of whispers.

The renowned humanitarian surgeon.

Killed during the same attack.

"The only thing missing with their daughter..."

He slowly raised the medal.

"...was this."

Maya looked at the tarnished silver.

"It was mine?"

Marcus nodded.

"Your father wore it in every deployment."

"When rescue teams found the abandoned vehicle..."

"It was gone."

He stepped closer.

"It was wrapped around the neck of a little girl."

Maya's knees weakened.

She almost fell.

For twenty-four years...

She had believed she belonged to no one.

Now history itself was reaching out to claim her.

Across the ballroom, Ethan finally found his voice.

"Maya..."

She didn't look at him.

Not once.

May you like

Because for the first time in her life...

She was beginning to understand who she truly was.
