Chapter 4: Everything She Owned... Wasn't Hers

Victoria's confidence disappeared.

"So... there has to be some misunderstanding."

Her voice trembled.

"I didn't know who you were."

Elena regarded her calmly.

"I know."

She folded the handkerchief and slipped it back into her pocket.

"And that's exactly why we're here."

Victoria swallowed.

"I would've treated you differently."

"I know you would have."

Elena's expression never changed.

"That's the problem."

The ballroom remained perfectly silent.

"You offered kindness only after you believed it could benefit you."

She looked toward the head of security.

"Escort Ms. Sterling from my property."

Two security officers immediately stepped forward.

Victoria stepped backward.

"Wait—please."

No one came to her defense.

The same guests who had laughed moments earlier now avoided eye contact.

Several quietly walked away.

Others pretended to study the artwork on the walls.

Her influence had evaporated in less than a minute.

Elena watched without satisfaction or anger.

Only certainty.

As Victoria was escorted through the grand entrance, the ballroom doors slowly closed behind her.

The music began again.

A server offered Elena a fresh glass of champagne.

She accepted it with a small smile.

Arthur adjusted his cufflinks.

"The schedule for tomorrow remains unchanged."

Elena nodded once.

"It always does."

Business resumed.
