Chapter 4: Labor in the Storm

Lena was rushed to the hospital under police escort.
Outside, rain hammered the city.
Inside the ambulance, pain came in waves.
Not from the fall anymore.
Labor.
Too early.
Too dangerous.
The paramedic leaned over her.
“Stay with me, Mrs. Whitmore.”
Lena gripped the side rail.
“My baby?”
“Heartbeat is there,” he said. “But we need to move fast.”
At the hospital, doctors surrounded her.
Lights blurred.
Voices overlapped.
Then Detective Ruiz appeared at the door.
Daniel had been arrested.
Vanessa had confessed.
Harold had given a statement.
But Lena barely heard any of it.
All she heard was the monitor.
Fast.
Fragile.
Alive.
Hours passed like years.
Then, just before dawn, the room filled with one sound.
A cry.
Small.
Fierce.
Real.
Lena turned her head, exhausted and trembling.
The nurse placed the baby against her chest.
A boy.
Her son.
His tiny fingers curled against her skin.
Lena cried then.
Not from fear.
From survival.
May you like
She named him Noah.
Because after the storm, something still lived.
