CHAPTER 2: THE RAINY NIGHT

Ethan remembered the rain before he remembered the blood.

He had been nineteen.

Too proud.

Too reckless.

Too certain that being a Sterling heir made him untouchable.

That night, his car had slid off a mountain road during a storm. The impact shattered the windshield and trapped him behind the wheel. His phone was dead. His leg was bleeding. Water poured through the broken glass.

He thought he was going to die alone.

Then a woman appeared in the rain.

Anna Bennett.

She was not afraid.

She broke the passenger window with a rock, cut her hands pulling him free, and dragged him away seconds before the car exploded.

Ethan remembered her kneeling beside him.

He remembered her silver pendant swinging from her neck.

He remembered her whispering, “Stay awake. Someone still needs you.”

When the ambulance arrived, she vanished.

For ten years, Ethan searched.

Private investigators found nothing.

Until tonight.

Until Claire.

Back in the ballroom, Ethan reached into his tuxedo pocket and pulled out an old folded photograph.

Claire’s breath caught.

It was her mother.

Younger.

Soaked from rain.

Standing beside a damaged ambulance.

Wearing the same pendant.

“My father took this from the hospital report,” Ethan said. “Your mother saved my life.”

Claire stared at the photo, her eyes filling with tears she refused to let fall.

Victoria lunged forward.

“That is enough.”

Ethan finally looked at her.

And his expression changed.

It was no longer shock.

It was suspicion.

“Why are you afraid of this necklace?” he asked.

Victoria laughed once.

Thin.

Nervous.

“I’m not afraid of costume jewelry.”

Claire’s hand tightened around the pendant.

“It isn’t costume jewelry,” Ethan said.

He turned the pendant gently in Claire’s hand.

On the back, hidden beneath years of wear, was a tiny engraved mark.

S.S.

Sterling Seal.

The entire room went still.

Claire whispered, “Why would my mother have something from your family?”

May you like

Ethan looked at Victoria.

“That’s what I’m going to find out.”
