CHAPTER 1: THE GIRL IN THE WAITRESS UNIFORM

The ballroom went silent the moment Ethan Sterling whispered her name.

Claire Bennett froze.

Not because he knew her.

But because he looked at her like he had been searching for her his entire life.

Victoria Bennett’s fingers were still clenched around the torn fabric of Claire’s dress. Sequins glittered across the carpet like broken stars. A few guests stared. Others pretended not to see.

That was how rich people handled cruelty.

They watched politely.

Victoria snapped first.

“Mr. Sterling,” she said, forcing a smile. “I apologize. My stepdaughter has always had a flair for drama.”

Claire lowered her eyes.

Stepdaughter.

That word still felt like a punishment.

Ethan did not look at Victoria.

His gaze stayed locked on the small silver pendant resting against Claire’s chest.

“Where did you get that necklace?” he asked.

Claire touched it carefully.

“My mother gave it to me.”

The color drained from Ethan’s face.

Victoria’s smile vanished.

“Claire,” she said sharply, “go change.”

But Ethan stepped forward.

“No.”

One word.

Quiet.

Controlled.

Powerful enough to stop the room.

Claire looked up at him.

For the first time that night, someone had defended her without asking what she was worth.

Ethan’s voice dropped.

“What was your mother’s name?”

Claire hesitated.

“Anna.”

Ethan swallowed hard.

“Anna Bennett?”

Claire nodded.

A glass slipped from someone’s hand and shattered.

Victoria turned pale.

Ethan looked as though the floor had disappeared beneath him.

Ten years ago, on a rainy night, a woman named Anna had saved his life.

And disappeared before he could thank her.
