CHAPTER 2 — The House That Was Not Safe

CHAPTER 2 — The House That Was Not Safe
The alley smelled of rain, rust, and forgotten things.
Broken fences leaned against collapsing walls. Cardboard boxes soaked in water lined the ground like makeshift shelter.
And there—half covered in an old coat—lay a young woman.
Unconscious.
Barely breathing.
“Mom…” Lucy whispered, kneeling beside her.
Daniel immediately called for medical assistance.
Within minutes, the woman was rushed to the hospital.
Lucy refused to let go of Leo when nurses tried to take him.
“No,” she said firmly, stepping back. “He stays with me.”
Daniel knelt beside her again.
“They’re trying to help him,” he said softly.
Lucy shook her head.
“You said that before,” she whispered. “Then people take things away.”
Those words hit Daniel harder than he expected.
Because she wasn’t just scared.
She was experienced in loss.
Hours later, the doctor came out.
“She’s severely malnourished, exhausted… and dangerously weak. She’ll survive—but only barely.”
Daniel exhaled slowly.
“And the baby?”
The doctor lowered his voice.
“He wouldn’t have made it another night.”
Daniel turned toward the waiting room.
Lucy was sitting on the floor, rocking Leo gently, humming a broken lullaby only she understood.
And in that moment, Daniel made a decision.
May you like
He was not walking away from them.
Not this time.
