CHAPTER 1 — The Call That Changed Everything

CHAPTER 1 — The Call That Changed Everything
A police officer responded to what seemed like a routine call… and found a five-year-old girl walking barefoot down an empty street.
She was dragging a torn plastic bag filled with trash behind her.
But what made Officer Daniel freeze wasn’t the trash.
It was what she was holding against her chest.
A baby.
Wrapped in thin, worn fabric, barely moving, pressed tightly into her small arms as if she was the only shield keeping him alive.
Daniel had seen poverty before.
But not like this.
The girl moved carefully along the sidewalk, stopping every few steps to pick up scraps, never once letting the baby slip from her grip. When a cold wind blew, she turned her body sideways to protect him.
Like it was instinct.
Like it was survival.
When she finally noticed Daniel’s uniform, she stopped.
Fear crossed her face immediately—but not the fear of a stranger.
The fear of authority.
Of being taken.
Daniel slowly lowered himself to her level, making his voice as gentle as possible.
“Hey… I’m not here to get you in trouble. What’s your name?”
A long silence.
Then barely above a whisper:
“Lucy.”
She hesitated, then lifted five fingers.
“I’m five.”
Daniel nodded softly.
“And the baby?”
Her grip tightened.
“He’s Leo,” she said quietly. “My brother.”
Something inside Daniel shifted.
“Where are your parents, Lucy?”
She looked down the empty street.
“Mom is there… but she doesn’t wake up much anymore.”
And without waiting, she turned and walked toward a narrow alley.
May you like
Daniel followed.
He didn’t know yet that this decision would change all three of their lives forever.
