Chapter 3: The Setup

Friday night arrived beneath chandeliers and polished marble.

The annual Sterling Innovations Charity Gala filled the Plaza Hotel ballroom with New York's wealthiest investors, executives, philanthropists, and politicians.

Crystal glasses sparkled beneath golden lights.

An orchestra played softly.

Waiters drifted effortlessly through the crowd.

Julian Hayes looked perfectly at ease.

Dressed in an impeccably tailored tuxedo, he smiled for photographs, accepted handshakes, and played the role of devoted executive husband with effortless confidence.

Over the previous three days, he had left Eleanor dozens of voicemails.

Some apologetic.

Some defensive.

Some accusing her of overreacting.

He assumed she was hiding somewhere, devastated.

He never imagined she had been preparing for war.

He didn't notice her until she stepped onto the stage.

Conversations slowly faded.

Heads turned.

Eleanor appeared beneath the spotlight wearing a crimson evening gown that commanded the room before she ever spoke.

She approached the microphone with quiet confidence.

No notes.

No hesitation.

"Good evening."

Her voice carried effortlessly across the ballroom.

"Thank you all for joining us tonight in support of Sterling Innovations."

She paused.

"My father built this company on three principles."

"Trust."

"Transparency."

"And loyalty."

Silence spread through the ballroom.

Then Eleanor looked directly at Julian.

Across fifty feet of polished marble and perfectly arranged tables, their eyes met.

For the first time since she'd walked into the penthouse, Julian looked uncertain.

"Recently," she continued, "I've learned that not everyone in my inner circle believes in those same principles."

A ripple of whispers moved through the audience.

"I've discovered that sometimes the greatest threat to a company isn't outside its walls."

"It's sitting at your own dinner table."
