Chapter 2: The Paper Trail

Forty-eight hours later, heartbreak had become something infinitely more useful.

Purpose.

Eleanor sat inside the glass conference room overlooking Midtown Manhattan at Sterling & Vance, the law firm her father had helped build decades earlier.

Across the polished mahogany table sat Marcus Bennett.

He had known Eleanor since she was twelve.

He was also the most feared divorce attorney in New York.

Marcus slid a thick manila folder across the table.

"You trusted your instincts," he said quietly.

"I'm glad you did."

Eleanor opened the folder.

Rows of bank transfers.

Offshore accounts.

Corporate filings.

Wire receipts.

Emails.

Every page made her pulse steadier instead of faster.

"It wasn't just an affair," Marcus continued.

"Chloe isn't some girlfriend."

He leaned forward.

"She's a corporate liquidator."

Eleanor's eyes remained fixed on the documents.

Julian hadn't simply cheated.

He had been quietly using his authority as her husband and proxy board member to move company assets into shell corporations under Chloe's control.

Months of planning.

Millions of dollars.

Every transaction carefully hidden beneath layers of legal paperwork.

Marcus tapped another document.

"He was waiting for your Tokyo trip next month."

"You would've been overseas."

"He and Chloe would've triggered the buyout clause, forced a vote of no confidence, and stripped you of controlling interest in Sterling Innovations."

He paused.

"You getting home early didn't ruin date night."

"It destroyed their entire timetable."

Everything suddenly made sense.

Julian encouraging her international travel.

His insistence on managing their investments.

His sudden interest in company governance.

His growing emotional distance.

He hadn't been falling out of love.

He'd been positioning himself.

Eleanor slowly closed the folder.

When she looked up again, there wasn't a trace of grief left in her expression.

Only resolve.

"Prepare the divorce petition."

Marcus nodded.

"And activate the morality clause in the prenup."

A faint smile crossed Marcus's face.

"I want every document ready by Friday evening."

"You'll have them."
