CHAPTER 2 — The Ghost Division Awakens

The pendant lay in Vance’s palm like it was still alive.

Every second it stayed exposed, the atmosphere inside the country club grew heavier—like something unseen was pressing down on the building from above.

Maya could feel it too now.

Not understanding it… but reacting to it.

A strange pressure behind her eyes. A flicker of images she had never lived—gunfire in distant snow, a man shouting orders, the smell of burning metal.

She gasped softly.

Vance noticed immediately.

His voice lowered. “You feel it, don’t you?”

Maya shook her head, terrified. “Stop… I don’t want this. I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

But her breath was uneven now. Her fingers trembled as the baby in her arms grew quiet again, as if sensing something beyond human understanding.

Victoria, still trying to regain control, stepped forward angrily.

“This is ridiculous! You’re all acting like she’s some kind of weapon—”

Vance turned sharply.

And this time, there was no patience left in him.

“She is,” he said.

The word hit harder than the slap from earlier.

Silence shattered into chaos.

Outside the glass walls of the country club, headlights appeared.

Then more.

And more.

Black vehicles lined the driveway in complete silence—no sirens, no announcement. Just disciplined arrival.

Men in dark uniforms stepped out in perfect formation.

No markings.

No insignia.

But every movement screamed one thing:

They were not police.

They were not security.

They were something else entirely.

Vance looked at them and exhaled slowly.

“So they found her,” he said.

Maya’s heart dropped. “Who found me?”

Vance didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he placed the pendant gently back into her trembling hand.

The moment her skin touched it again—

The pain returned.

Not physical.

Memory.

A voice echoed inside her mind that didn’t belong to her.

“If she survives, the system survives.”

Maya staggered backward, nearly dropping her baby.

“No… no, I’m not—this isn’t real!”

But Vance stepped closer, steadying her before she fell.

“Listen to me,” he said firmly. “You were not abandoned.”

He pointed at the vehicles outside.

“You were sealed.”

The doors of the country club exploded open.

Not literally—but the presence of the arriving men felt like an explosion anyway.

The leader stepped forward.

Tall. Masked. Calm.

His voice carried across the marble hall.

“Recover Subject ECHO-7.”

Victoria froze.

Even she understood now that she had stopped being the most powerful person in the room.

Maya stepped back instinctively.

“No… that’s not me…”

But Vance raised his hand.

And for the first time, he wasn’t commanding the room.

He was protecting her.

“She is under my custody,” he said coldly.

The masked man tilted his head.

“You no longer have custody, Colonel.”

A pause.

Then—

“You were decommissioned the moment you left her alive.”

The word decommissioned changed everything again.

Vance’s jaw tightened.

“So it’s true,” he whispered. “They activated the recovery protocol.”

Maya looked between them, shaking.

“What is ECHO-7?”

Vance didn’t hesitate this time.

He looked her dead in the eyes.

“Not what.”

“Who.”

And then, quieter:

“The only living key to the Ghost Division.”

The masked leader raised his hand.

“Take her.”

The soldiers moved.

Fast.

Precise.

Deadly.

But Vance was faster.

He shoved Maya behind him and drew a concealed sidearm.

The first shot cracked through the hall.

Guests screamed and dropped to the floor.

Victoria collapsed against a table, finally realizing she was no longer in control of anything—wealth meant nothing here.

Maya stood frozen behind Vance, clutching her baby as chaos erupted around her.

And for the first time in her life—

She didn’t feel useless.

She felt targeted.

Then it happened.

One of the masked soldiers lunged toward her.

Vance shouted, “DON’T LET HIM TOUCH HER—”

Too late.

The soldier grabbed her wrist.

May you like

The pendant flared hot.

And the entire room went white.
