Chapter 2: The Empire Built on Cruelty

Within twenty-four hours...

Hawthorne Holdings entered emergency suspension.

Every major lender froze its credit lines.

Board members resigned one after another.

Anonymous whistleblowers flooded investigators with evidence.

Unpaid workers.

Illegal land acquisitions.

Tax fraud.

Witness intimidation.

It was as if the entire empire had been waiting for permission to collapse.

Jonathan had not fabricated a single accusation.

He had merely removed the protection Victoria believed money guaranteed forever.

Meanwhile...

Emily sat quietly in her father's office overlooking Manhattan.

"I never wanted revenge," she admitted.

Jonathan nodded.

"I know."

"I just wanted them to stop."

He stared at the city skyline.

"People like Victoria never stop voluntarily."

Emily looked toward Daniel, who had been waiting outside for over three hours.

"I should speak to him."

Jonathan did not object.

Daniel entered slowly.

His expensive suit no longer hid how exhausted he looked.

"I'm sorry."

Emily remained silent.

"I was weak."

Still nothing.

"I told myself staying quiet kept the peace."

Emily finally looked into his eyes.

"No."

"It protected your comfort."

Daniel lowered his head.

"I know."

"I failed you every single day."

Emily smiled sadly.

"The day she pulled off my prosthetic leg..."

She paused.

"...you didn't lose your wife."

"You lost the privilege of being her husband."

Daniel closed his eyes.

He understood there was no argument left to make.

Some betrayals arrived quietly.

And stayed forever.
