Chapter 1: The Chairman's Decision

Chairman Jonathan Sterling did not raise his voice.
He simply bent down, lifted the prosthetic leg from the polished marble floor with both hands, and brushed away the dust as though he were holding something priceless.
The ballroom fell into absolute silence.
Every executive, politician, and donor present instinctively lowered their eyes.
Only Victoria Hawthorne—the arrogant mother-in-law—continued smirking.
"So that's what everyone is afraid of?" she scoffed. "A fake leg?"
Jonathan slowly turned toward her.
"No."
His voice was calm enough to make the room colder.
"They're afraid of what you forced my daughter to feel."
Victoria frowned.
"Daughter?"
Emily's trembling fingers covered her mouth.
She had spent six years hiding the truth.
Not because she was ashamed of being Jonathan Sterling's daughter.
Because she wanted one thing money had never been able to buy—a family that loved her for herself.
Instead, after losing her left leg in the same accident that claimed her mother's life, she became the perfect target.
Victoria called her defective.
Broken.
A burden.
Every family gathering became another public humiliation.
Her husband, Daniel, never defended her.
He simply looked away.
Jonathan gently knelt before Emily.
Without caring that hundreds of cameras were recording him, he carefully attached the prosthetic leg himself.
His hands shook.
Not from weakness.
From guilt.
"I promised your mother," he whispered, "that no one would ever make you feel less than whole."
Emily's tears finally fell.
"You weren't supposed to know..."
"I should have known years ago."
Jonathan stood.
Then looked directly at his chief legal officer.
"Begin."
That single word unleashed chaos.
Across the ballroom, dozens of phones buzzed simultaneously.
Banks.
Law firms.
Government regulators.
Investment partners.
Every order had already been waiting for one confirmation.
Jonathan had just given it.
Victoria laughed nervously.
"This is ridiculous."
"You can't destroy us because of one family argument."
Jonathan's expression never changed.
"I'm not destroying your family because you insulted my daughter."
He paused.
"I'm destroying it because you've spent twenty years building your fortune by treating people exactly the way you treated her tonight."
The ballroom doors opened.
Federal investigators walked inside carrying sealed folders.
Victoria's smile disappeared.
