Chapter 6 - The Heartbeat

Nathan arrived twelve minutes early.
No assistant.
No driver.
No flowers.
He sat in the waiting room holding a paper cup of terrible hospital coffee.
Emma almost smiled.
“You hate hospital coffee.”
“I’ve developed humility.”
“That would be a medical breakthrough.”
Nathan laughed softly.
For one second, they sounded like themselves.
Then the nurse called Emma’s name.
Inside the examination room, Nathan stood near the wall while the technician prepared the ultrasound.
Emma climbed onto the table.
“Dad can sit beside you.”
The word struck both of them.
Dad.
Nathan slowly moved toward the chair.
The screen flickered.
Gray shapes became a head.
A spine.
A hand.
Nathan stopped breathing.
“There she is,” the technician said.
Emma turned.
“She?”
The technician smiled.
“You didn’t know?”
Emma laughed.
“No.”
Nathan covered his mouth.
“A girl.”
Emma looked at him.
Tears ran down his face.
He did not wipe them away.
The technician measured quietly.
Then the heartbeat filled the room.
Fast.
Strong.
Alive.
Nathan lowered his head.
Emma remembered hearing that sound alone at twelve weeks.
She remembered wishing he had been beside her.
She could not rewrite that day.
But she could acknowledge this one.
She reached across the space between them.
Nathan looked at her hand.
Then placed his own beneath it.
The contact lasted less than a minute.
It felt more intimate than every expensive vacation they had taken in years.
Afterward, the doctor explained that Emma’s previous premature contractions meant they needed to remain cautious.
No unnecessary travel.
Immediate hospital evaluation if the contractions returned.
Nathan listened to every word.
He asked two questions.
Both were about Emma.
Neither was about when she could return to New York.
In the parking lot, Emma handed him a printed ultrasound image.
Nathan stared at it.
“You can keep that one.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
His eyes lifted.
“Thank you.”
Emma nodded.
Her phone buzzed.
A message from Rachel.
Have you seen the Whitmore statement?
Emma opened the link.
Whitmore Global had released Nathan’s statement exactly as promised.
He had taken responsibility for neglecting his marriage.
He had explicitly denied rumors that Emma was manipulating the pregnancy.
Then came the final paragraph.
Mrs. Whitmore is entitled to privacy, safety, and the freedom to make decisions regarding her own future without corporate pressure or public harassment. Any suggestion otherwise does not represent me.
Emma read it twice.
Nathan watched her.
“The stock dropped three percent this morning.”
Emma looked up.
“You knew that would happen.”
“Yes.”
“And you released it anyway.”
“Yes.”
“Douglas must be furious.”
“He is.”
Nathan slipped the ultrasound into his coat.
Emma studied the man standing in front of her.
For years, Nathan had asked her to sacrifice for his company.
Now, for the first time, she had watched him sacrifice something for the truth.
Then his phone rang.
Douglas Mercer.
Nathan answered.
His face hardened.
“What emergency meeting?”
A pause.
“When?”
Another pause.
“I understand.”
He ended the call.
Emma already knew.
“The board?”
May you like
Nathan nodded.
“They’re voting on whether to remove me as CEO.”
