CHAPTER 9: VANESSA’S VERSION

Vanessa entered the interview room without makeup, jewelry, or the confidence she had worn on the courthouse steps.
Her attorney placed a cooperation agreement on the table.
“I want protection,” Vanessa said.
The prosecutor did not blink.
“You pushed a pregnant woman down thirty stairs.”
“Richard manipulated me.”
“You extended both arms.”
“He told me Khloe was destroying our future.”
“You chose to believe him.”
Vanessa’s mouth trembled.
Then she revealed what Richard had done.
He had created the shell corporations using her name and electronic signature. He told her they were vehicles for tax-efficient property investments. He promised they would marry after Khloe gave birth.
He also convinced Vanessa that Khloe planned to accuse her of stealing corporate funds.
“He said Harrison would bury me,” she whispered. “He said I would spend twenty years in prison unless Khloe stopped fighting.”
The prosecutor leaned forward.
“Did Richard tell you to hurt her?”
“Not directly.”
“Then what did he say?”
Vanessa looked toward the camera recording the interview.
“He said some problems disappear after one hard fall.”
Across town, Harrison watched the live feed with Khloe’s permission.
“That’s not enough,” the federal agent warned. “Vanessa is trying to reduce her sentence.”
“She knows more,” Harrison said.
During the second hour, prosecutors showed Vanessa the message Richard had sent after the push.
Delete everything. Say she slipped.
Vanessa stared at the screen.
“He told me he loved me.”
“No,” Harrison said from the observation room. “He told you what kept you useful.”
Vanessa finally broke.
She admitted delivering cash to Judge Pierce.
She identified the private accounts used to pay Dr. Leland.
She provided access codes to an encrypted server containing investor records.
Then she mentioned a name Harrison had not expected.
“Richard wasn’t the person who designed the financial scheme.”
“Who did?”
Vanessa swallowed.
“His father.”
Charles Harrington had supposedly retired five years earlier after suffering a stroke.
In reality, he had been directing the operation from a private estate in Delaware.
The fraud extended back nearly two decades.
Khloe’s marriage had been one piece of a much larger machine.
That evening, Harrison visited Charles Harrington’s estate with federal agents.
The house was empty.
A private airfield nearby reported that Charles’s plane had departed forty minutes earlier.
Its destination had not been filed.

But one passenger had boarded with him.
Judge Malcolm Pierce.
