PAGE 13 — CHAPTER 13: THE MAN WHO RAN

Charles Harrington was arrested at a private marina while attempting to board a cargo ship under a false name.

Judge Pierce was found alive in a rural motel.

He had been beaten, drugged, and left without identification.

According to Pierce, Charles attacked him after learning federal authorities had obtained the courthouse footage and Vanessa’s testimony.

Pierce immediately requested immunity.

In exchange, he provided twenty years of records documenting bribery, rigged property rulings, fraudulent permits, and political payoffs.

Richard’s criminal case expanded overnight.

He was charged with conspiracy, wire fraud, bribery, evidence tampering, and attempted exploitation of a vulnerable adult.

Vanessa accepted a plea agreement requiring her to testify.

She would still face prison for pushing Khloe, but prosecutors agreed not to seek the maximum sentence.

The public reaction was divided.

Some believed Vanessa was another victim of Richard’s manipulation.

Others believed no amount of manipulation excused what she had done.

Khloe had no interest in the argument.

She was focused on Hope.

Harrison finally told her about Samuel Reed.

Khloe agreed to meet him in a quiet hospital conference room.

Samuel did not reach for the baby.

He remained near the door.

“I’m not here to claim anything,” he said. “I’m here because what happened to you was wrong.”

Khloe studied him.

“You didn’t know?”

“No.”

“Do you have children?”

“A son. He’s six.”

Hope opened her eyes at the sound of his voice.

Samuel’s expression broke.

Khloe noticed the same small dimple in his left cheek that appeared whenever Hope yawned.

“I don’t know what this means,” she admitted.

“It doesn’t have to mean anything today.”

For the first time in months, someone had given Khloe permission not to have an answer.

Outside the room, Harrison waited.

Khloe approached him.

“I’m still angry.”

“You should be.”

“But I don’t want Hope growing up inside secrets.”

“Neither do I.”

“Then no more deciding what truth I can handle.”

Harrison nodded.

“Never again.”

Before they could say more, the district attorney called.

Richard had agreed to testify against his father.

In return, he wanted one condition.

A private meeting with Khloe.

Harrison immediately refused.

Khloe took the phone.

“I’ll meet him.”
