Chapter 4 — Home Again

Patricia was arrested before sunset.
The stolen jewelry from Madeline's collection was recovered.
Detectives later connected Patricia to multiple wealthy widowers across three states.
She had never wanted a family.
She collected fortunes.
The Whitakers had almost become her next success.
Several weeks later Ethan walked into the kitchen before sunrise.
Clara was already making pancakes.
She looked startled.
"I thought you had an early meeting."
"I canceled it."
He rolled up the sleeves of his expensive dress shirt.
"Teach me."
She blinked.
"Teach you what?"
"Everything."
"Which twin likes extra frosting."
"Which stuffed animal belongs on which pillow."
"How Sophie knows a thunderstorm is coming before anyone else."
"How Avery hides her tears when she misses her mom."
Clara smiled softly.
"You really want to learn?"
"No."
He looked toward the staircase where two little voices were beginning to giggle upstairs.
"I need to."
Months passed.
Breakfast became a family tradition instead of an exception.
The blue hallway lamp stayed on every night.
The girls slowly laughed more than they cried.
One spring afternoon Ethan stood beside Madeline's grave holding two tiny bouquets while Avery and Sophie chased butterflies across the grass.
Clara waited several steps behind, giving them space.
Ethan looked at the headstone.
"I thought protecting them meant buying everything they could ever need."
A gentle breeze moved through the trees.
He smiled through quiet tears.
"It turns out..."
"They only needed someone who never left."
He turned.
The twins were running toward him.
One grabbed his left hand.
The other reached for Clara's.
Without thinking...
Ethan reached out his free hand.
Clara hesitated only a moment before taking it.
The four of them walked away together beneath the warm Texas sunset.
For the first time since Madeline died...

The Whitaker house was no longer just beautiful.
It was finally home.
