Chapter 1 — The First Crack

Patricia smiled the way only practiced people could smile.

Warm enough to seem kind.

Measured enough to hide calculation.

That afternoon, after Ethan quietly slipped back out of the house without anyone knowing he had returned, he canceled his flight to Chicago but never told Patricia.

Instead, he watched.

The security cameras he had installed after Madeline's death suddenly became something they had never been before—not protection.

Evidence.

For three days he reviewed hours of footage.

He expected to find Clara crossing boundaries.

Instead he found something else.

Every morning, Clara packed two lunches.

Every afternoon, she tied loose shoelaces before school pickup.

Every night, after the girls fell asleep, she quietly folded laundry that wasn't even part of her job description before leaving through the staff entrance.

Then he noticed Patricia.

Whenever Ethan wasn't home, Patricia arrived much earlier than she claimed.

She never entered the nursery.

She never played with the girls.

She went directly to Ethan's office.

Sometimes she opened drawers.

Sometimes she photographed documents.

Sometimes she walked through the master bedroom with her phone held low, recording every cabinet and every safe.

On the fourth evening Ethan froze the video.

Patricia stood inside Madeline's old dressing room.

She picked up Madeline's wedding ring.

Held it against her own finger.

Smiled.

Then slipped it into her purse.

Ethan didn't breathe.

She had spent weeks convincing him Clara was stealing.

The thief had been standing beside him at charity galas the entire time.
