Chapter 6: The Daughter He Abandoned

The room felt smaller after Clara’s confession.
Emily stared at her.
“What do you mean you’re not just a maid?”
Clara looked at the photograph.
Her fingers trembled slightly.
“My real name is Clara Whitmore.”
Margaret’s eyes widened.
“Whitmore?”
Emily looked between them.
“What does that mean?”
Margaret slowly sat down.
“The Whitmore family owned half of Carter Industries before Daniel’s grandfather bought them out.”
Clara nodded.
“My father was a partner of the Carter family.”
She looked at Emily.
“Until Daniel’s father destroyed him.”
The story came out slowly.
Years ago, Clara’s father had discovered financial crimes inside Carter Industries. He planned to expose them.
But before he could.
He was framed.
His reputation was destroyed.
His company disappeared.
And his family lost everything.
“My father died believing everyone had abandoned him,” Clara said.
“But I knew the truth.”
Emily whispered:
“And you came here for revenge?”
Clara shook her head.
“No.”
Her answer surprised everyone.
“I came here because Daniel’s father asked me for help before he died.”
Emily looked confused.
“He knew he was in danger?”
“Yes.”
Clara revealed another document.
“A letter.”
She handed it to Emily.
The handwriting was old.
Emily read the first line.
Clara,
If anything happens to me, protect my granddaughter-in-law and her child. Daniel cannot be allowed to inherit everything.
Emily’s eyes widened.
“Granddaughter-in-law…”
She looked up.
“He knew about me?”
Clara nodded.
“Your grandfather and Daniel’s father had an agreement. The Carter and Whitmore families were supposed to protect each other.”
Margaret added:
“But Daniel destroyed that agreement.”
The detective stepped closer.
“There’s more.”
He placed another file on the table.
“Daniel has been under investigation for years.”
Emily looked at him.
“Why wasn’t he arrested?”
“Because every piece of evidence disappeared.”
Clara quietly answered:
“Because someone inside the police department was helping him.”
Everyone became silent.
The detective’s expression turned serious.
“We found the person.”
Emily’s heart stopped.
“Who?”
Detective Walker looked at the mansion entrance.
A police officer walked in.
Behind him was another man.
Older.
Wearing a suit.
Someone Emily recognized immediately.
Her own uncle.
Richard Carter.
The man who had comforted her after her parents died.
The man who had told her Daniel was the perfect husband.
Richard looked around the room.
Then smiled.
“You finally found the truth.”
Emily stepped back.
“Uncle Richard…”
His smile disappeared.
“Unfortunately, you found it too late.”
The detective reached for his weapon.
But Richard raised his hands.
“I’m not here to fight.”
He looked directly at Emily.
“I’m here to tell you something Daniel never wanted you to know.”
A pause.
“Your baby was never the reason Daniel wanted you dead.”
Emily frowned.
“What are you talking about?”
Richard’s voice became cold.
“The baby is only the beginning.”
And then he revealed the secret that changed everything.
May you like
“Daniel wasn’t trying to inherit your grandfather’s fortune.”
“He was trying to erase the evidence that you were the rightful owner of the entire Carter empire.”
