Chapter 17 - The Empty Throne

The arrests began before sunrise.
Marcus Reed was charged first.
Conspiracy.
Kidnapping.
Attempted murder.
Financial crimes.
Obstruction.
The list continued for pages.
Victor Vale was charged two days later.
His cooperation reduced nothing about Adrian’s opinion of him.
Thomas Kane entered federal protection while prosecutors reviewed his actions.
Daniel Cross testified.
Grant Mercer provided records proving Marcus had tried to frame his organization.
And Adrian Vale sat for forty-three hours of interviews.
He admitted everything he had personally authorized.
Every bribe.
Every illegal payment.
Every business used to hide criminal proceeds.
Rebecca Sloan repeatedly warned him.
“You are giving prosecutors evidence they never had.”
“I know.”
“You could stop answering.”
“No.”
“Why?”
Adrian looked through the glass wall.
Grace sat in the waiting area with Lily sleeping against her chest.
Emma colored beside them.
Adrian smiled faintly.
“Because she’ll eventually ask who I was.”
“And I want to tell her the truth.”
The government froze dozens of accounts.
Vale clubs closed.
Construction contracts were suspended.
Shipping companies entered receivership.
Men who once called Adrian every hour suddenly stopped answering his calls.
Politicians denied knowing him.
Business partners discovered morality overnight.
Adrian watched an empire disappear in less than three weeks.
Strangely, he slept better.
The legitimate assets belonging to Lily’s trust remained protected.
Evelyn had unknowingly helped create the structure before her death.
Adrian retained enough lawful wealth that Lily would never need anything.
But he sold the mansion.
Grace stared at him when he told her.
“You’re selling it?”
“Yes.”
“You grew up there.”
“No.”
Adrian looked around the enormous marble foyer.
“I survived there.”
“That’s different.”
Grace understood.
Emma ran across the room carrying her rabbit.
“Where will Lily live?”
Adrian crouched.
“Somewhere smaller.”
Emma looked suspicious.
“How small?”
“Only six bedrooms.”
Grace laughed for the first time in weeks.
Emma considered this.
“That’s still big.”
Adrian smiled.
“I’m learning.”
That evening, Adrian entered Evelyn’s old room.
Her clothes still hung inside the wardrobe.
Books remained beside the bed.
A half-finished sketch rested near the window.
Adrian had kept everything exactly as she left it.
For eight months, the room had been a shrine.
Now he finally understood what Evelyn had asked him to do.
Live.
He packed her letters carefully.
He kept the paintings.
He kept the photographs.
Then he opened the wardrobe.
At the bottom was a small cardboard box he had never noticed.
Inside were baby clothes.
A white dress.
A pair of tiny shoes.
And a sealed envelope.
The writing on the front belonged to Evelyn.
FOR LILY’S FIRST BIRTHDAY.
Adrian sat on the floor.
Lily’s first birthday was three weeks away.
His hands shook as he opened it.
The first line made him cry.
My beautiful Lily.
