Chapter 14 - The Third Ambush

Victor survived.

The bullet passed through his shoulder.

Adrian moved him to a secure medical facility under federal supervision.

Not because Victor deserved protection.

Because Adrian wanted him alive to testify.

For the first time, Victor seemed to understand that Adrian did not intend to continue the old rules.

“No basement?”

Victor asked weakly.

“No disappearing body?”

Adrian looked at him.

“You’ll answer in court.”

Victor laughed once.

“Your father would be ashamed.”

Adrian thought of Evelyn’s letter.

“Good.”

That afternoon, Adrian met with federal prosecutor Rebecca Sloan.

For years, Sloan had tried to build cases against Vale businesses.

Adrian had blocked her.

Threatened witnesses had refused to cooperate.

Records had vanished.

Now Adrian walked into her office carrying enough evidence to destroy his own empire.

Rebecca stared at the files.

“What is this?”

“My surrender.”

She looked up sharply.

Adrian continued.

“Illegal accounts.”

“Unreported holdings.”

“Bribery records.”

“Front companies.”

“Names.”

Rebecca leaned back.

“You understand what you’re giving me?”

“Yes.”

“You could go to prison.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Adrian placed Evelyn’s letter on the desk.

“Because my daughter deserves a father who stops pretending corruption becomes acceptable when he controls it.”

Rebecca studied him.

“Where is Marcus Reed?”

“Missing.”

“Victor Vale?”

“Ready to testify.”

“Thomas Kane?”

“Also ready.”

Rebecca looked through the documents.

“This could dismantle half your organization.”

“All of it.”

She stared at him.

Adrian continued.

“In return, I want protection for Grace Miller and her children.”

“Lily included.”

Rebecca raised an eyebrow.

“Your daughter is alive?”

“Yes.”

Rebecca slowly closed the folder.

“That changes everything.”

“It changes me.”

Before she could answer, Adrian’s phone rang.

Grace.

He answered immediately.

Her voice was panicked.

“Adrian.”

“What happened?”

“Lily’s gone.”

Adrian stood.

The entire room seemed to vanish around him.

“What?”

“I put her down for a nap.”

“I was in the next room.”

“The security alarm never sounded.”

“When I came back, the crib was empty.”

Adrian’s voice became terrifyingly calm.

“Where is Emma?”

“With me.”

“Lock the door.”

“I’m coming.”

Then another call appeared.

Unknown number.

Adrian answered.

Marcus spoke.

“You wanted me.”

“You have me.”

Marcus laughed.

“No.”

“I have something better.”

A baby cried in the background.

Adrian closed his eyes.

Marcus continued.

“Midnight.”

“Vale Tower.”

“Come alone.”

“And Adrian?”

“Yes?”

“Bring Evelyn’s recording.”

The call ended.

Rebecca Sloan was already standing.

“You are not going alone.”

Adrian looked at her.

“Yes.”

“You’re not.”

“That’s my daughter.”

“And this is exactly why kidnappers dictate terms.”

Adrian stared out the window toward Vale Tower.

For years, it had been the tallest symbol of his power.

Now Marcus had chosen it as the place to end everything.

Adrian looked back at Rebecca.

“Then make sure when I walk inside alone, I’m not really alone.”
