Chapter 4: A Different Kind of Family

Nine months later...
Sunlight filled the same mansion.
The broken chandelier had never been replaced.
Emily said it reminded her that beautiful things could hide deadly intentions.
Instead, fresh flowers hung from the ceiling beams every week.
Life had changed completely.
Daniel pleaded guilty to attempted murder, insurance fraud, and multiple counts of financial forgery.
He was sentenced to decades in federal prison.
The mansion was sold.
Most of the money was donated to shelters for abused women and children.
Emily kept only one thing.
A framed photograph taken outside the courthouse.
She stood holding her newborn daughter.
Beside her stood Sophie.
No maid's uniform.
No servant's title.
Just family.
Emily had offered Sophie a management position in her new charitable foundation.
Sophie accepted on one condition.
"I don't want special treatment."
Emily smiled.
"You won't get it."
"What you'll get..."
"...is the sister I should have found years ago."
As they laughed together, baby Grace reached out with tiny fingers and wrapped her hand around Sophie's thumb.
Sophie smiled through quiet tears.

Sometimes they carried laundry baskets.
