Chapter 2 – The Promise Made in the Rain

The ambulance doors slammed shut just as Lily's tiny fingers slipped from Nora's bloodstained apron.

"No!"

Her cry pierced through the storm.

She tried to climb after the stretcher, but Vincent caught her before she could fall.

"Daddy... she can't go."

Vincent had buried his wife three years earlier.

He had watched doctors disconnect machines.

He had stood beside a coffin while his six-year-old daughter asked why Mommy wouldn't wake up.

He had promised himself he would never fail Lily again.

Yet tonight...

A stranger had done what he almost couldn't.

She had taken a bullet meant for his daughter.

The ambulance disappeared into the rain.

Lily kept staring after it.

"She's alone."

Vincent's jaw tightened.

"So was your mother."

County General Hospital smelled of antiseptic and exhausted hope.

Doctors rushed Nora straight into surgery.

The bullet had passed through her shoulder, narrowly missing an artery.

"If she'd been one inch to the left..."

The surgeon never finished.

He didn't have to.

Vincent sat outside the operating room in the same bloodstained white shirt.

His men stood twenty feet away, pretending not to notice that their boss hadn't spoken for over an hour.

Finally, Luca approached carefully.

"We found the shooters."

Vincent didn't look up.

"Alive?"

"Two."

"And the third?"

"He won't be speaking again."

Vincent nodded once.

"Don't kill the other two."

Luca blinked.

"Boss?"

"I want names."

A pause.

"And I want whoever hired them to believe they succeeded."

Luca understood immediately.

Someone close to Vincent had ordered the attack.

Someone inside.

Just before dawn...

The operating-room light finally turned green.

The surgeon removed his mask.

"She'll live."

For the first time in years...

Vincent Callahan closed his eyes in relief.

When Nora woke the next afternoon, sunlight spilled softly through the hospital curtains.

Her shoulder burned.

Machines beeped beside her.

She remembered the gunfire.

The little girl.

The rain.

Then she heard a tiny voice.

"I knew you'd wake up."

Lily sat beside the bed holding the stuffed rabbit.

No security.

No nurses.

Just a child who refused to leave.

"You stayed?" Nora whispered.

Lily smiled through swollen eyes.

"I promised."

Before Nora could answer...

Vincent stepped quietly into the room.

He looked different somehow.

Still dangerous.

Still unreadable.

But something inside him had cracked.

He placed a small envelope on the bedside table.

"Your landlord has been paid."

Nora frowned.

"My medical bills too."

"I never asked you to."

"No."

His voice was calm.

"You asked for nothing."

"That's exactly why."

Nora slowly pushed the envelope back toward him.

"I didn't save Lily for money."

Silence filled the room.

Even Vincent hadn't expected that.

Finally, he nodded once.

Then he picked the envelope back up.

For the first time in years...

Someone had refused him.

And strangely...

He respected her more because of it.

Outside the hospital...

A black sedan watched from across the street.

Inside...

A man lowered his binoculars.

"So..."

he whispered into his phone.

"The waitress survived."

The voice on the other end remained calm.

"Then Phase Two begins."

The call disconnected.

Neither Vincent...

Nor Nora...

May you like

Realized the diner attack had never been the real mission.

They had only been the distraction.
