Chapter 1 – The Bruises Beneath the Pearls

The last pearl rolled across the polished marble floor before disappearing beneath the fireplace.

Neither of them moved.

Enzo DeLuca stood frozen, one hand still suspended in the air where he had instinctively reached to steady Harper after her wedding dress ripped apart.

His gaze wasn't on the ruined silk.

It wasn't on the expensive lace.

It was on the bruises.

Dark fingerprints ringed both of Harper's wrists.

Purple welts spread across her ribs like fading storms.

Thin silver scars crossed her back—old enough to have healed, fresh enough to tell a story no one wanted told.

For the first time in years...

Enzo forgot how to breathe.

Harper reacted before he did.

She wrapped both arms around herself and stumbled backward.

"Don't."

Her voice cracked.

"Please... just don't."

She wasn't talking to a husband.

She was talking to someone she expected would hurt her.

Enzo slowly lowered his hands.

"I wasn't going to."

She laughed—a tiny, broken sound that held no humor.

"They all say that."

Silence swallowed the room.

Outside, fireworks celebrating the marriage exploded above the DeLuca estate.

Inside...

Only shame remained.

Enzo had spent three years imagining this moment.

He had imagined making Richard Whitcomb's daughter suffer.

Making her understand what loss felt like.

Instead...

He was looking at someone who had already lost everything.

"Who did this?"

Harper looked away.

"It doesn't matter."

"It matters to me."

"No."

She smiled bitterly.

"It only matters because you think someone else got to your revenge first."

The words struck harder than any bullet.

Enzo said nothing.

Because she was right.

Five minutes ago...

That had been exactly what he thought.

Harper carefully gathered the torn pieces of her dress.

"I'll sleep somewhere else."

"There are twenty guest rooms."

"I'll take the smallest one."

She walked toward the door.

Then stopped.

Without looking back, she whispered,

"I'm sorry the dress tore."

Enzo stared after her.

Sorry?

She apologized...

For ruining a dress.

Not for ruining the marriage.

Not for disappointing him.

A woman covered in bruises...

Was apologizing for damaged fabric.

When the door closed...

Enzo poured himself a glass of whiskey.

Then another.

He never drank when angry.

Tonight...

He needed something stronger than anger.

He needed answers.

An hour later, he walked downstairs.

His oldest adviser, Marco Romano, was waiting in the library.

"You asked for everything we had on Harper Whitcomb."

Marco handed him a thick folder.

"It isn't much."

Enzo opened it.

Elite boarding schools.

Charity galas.

Magazine photographs.

Nothing unusual.

Nothing real.

He kept flipping.

Until one photograph slipped loose.

It wasn't from a newspaper.

It looked like surveillance.

Harper leaving a hospital.

Long sleeves in the middle of summer.

Head lowered.

Escorted by two Whitcomb security guards.

Date...

Four years earlier.

Attached beneath it was a single sentence.

Private psychiatric evaluation. Records sealed.

Enzo frowned.

"Psychiatric?"

Marco shook his head.

"Our source couldn't get the files."

"What about hospital staff?"

"Every employee signed lifetime nondisclosure agreements."

That wasn't normal.

Not even for billionaires.

Enzo continued reading.

Then stopped.

One final page.

Medical insurance payment...

Submitted by...

Not Richard Whitcomb.

But...

Whitcomb Family Foundation.

A shell corporation.

Designed to hide expenses.

Enzo looked up.

"What was she treated for?"

Marco hesitated.

"We don't know."

"But someone erased every trace."

Enzo closed the folder.

Richard Whitcomb had hidden something.

Not money.

Not scandal.

His own daughter.

Meanwhile...

Harper sat alone in one of the mansion's guest bedrooms.

She carefully stitched the torn wedding dress by hand.

Not because she loved it.

Because she had been taught...

Nothing expensive was ever allowed to stay broken.

Her fingers shook.

Every stitch reminded her of another night.

Another room.

Another locked door.

Another punishment.

She suddenly heard footsteps outside.

She froze.

Her breathing accelerated.

The doorknob turned.

Harper instinctively flinched.

But instead of entering...

Someone quietly placed a small sewing kit outside the door.

Then walked away.

No knocking.

No demands.

No threats.

Just...

Needles.

Thread.

And replacement pearls.

Harper stared at the unopened box for a very long time.

No one had ever replaced something she broke before.

They only replaced...

Her.

Across town...

Richard Whitcomb received a phone call.

"The marriage is complete."

He smiled.

"Excellent."

"And Mr. DeLuca has begun asking questions."

Richard's smile disappeared.

"About what?"

"Your daughter."

Silence.

Then...

Richard calmly opened a locked drawer.

Inside lay dozens of medical files.

Photographs.

DNA reports.

Court documents.

And one birth certificate.

Not Harper Whitcomb.

Harper Moretti.

Richard slowly burned the top page in the fireplace.

"If Enzo learns who her mother really was..."

His voice dropped to a whisper.

May you like

"The DeLucas won't want revenge anymore."

"They'll want a war."
