CHAPTER 4: THE TRUTH IN THE BASEMENT

They moved through the hidden corridor behind the closet—an emergency passage only Vincent knew existed.
Or thought he knew.
At the end: an old steel door.
Elena pressed her palm to the lock.
It opened.
Vincent stopped.
“How do you know this place?”
Elena didn’t look back.
“I cleaned it.”
A beat.
“And I memorized everything you forgot existed.”
The basement lights flickered on.
Rows of old files.
Encrypted drives.
And one name written across multiple sealed folders:
MARCUS TORINO
Vincent’s expression darkened.
Elena finally turned to him.
“He’s not improvising.”
“He’s been building this for five years.”
A long silence.
Then Vincent spoke:
“…And you?”
Elena’s eyes softened—just slightly.
“I was sent here to make sure you didn’t die before the truth came out.”
A distant explosion echoed upstairs.
Marcus had found the basement entrance.
Elena raised her weapon.
“This ends now.”
Vincent stepped forward beside her.
