Chapter 1: The Ring No One Was Supposed to See
The ballroom remained silent.
Even the string quartet stopped playing.
Victoria Bennett stared at the silver ring resting in her trembling palm as though time itself had frozen around it.
Emily stood awkwardly, still covered in white frosting, embarrassed by the attention she never wanted.
"I'm... sorry," she whispered. "I didn't mean to interrupt the party."
Victoria never answered.
Her thumb slowly traced the tiny engraving inside the worn band.
V.M.B.
Victoria Margaret Bennett.
Only one person in the world had ever owned that ring before Emily.
Her younger sister.
Margaret.
Forty years earlier.
Victoria's breathing became uneven.
"Where..." she asked quietly, "did you get this ring?"
Emily hesitated.
"My grandmother gave it to me before she passed away."
Victoria looked up instantly.
"What was her name?"
"Grace Parker."
Confusion crossed Victoria's face.
"No... that's impossible."
Emily nodded softly.
"She raised me after my mother died."
The older woman's eyes filled with disbelief.
"Your mother's name?"
"Sarah Parker."
The name struck Victoria like lightning.
Sarah.
Margaret had once written about a little girl named Sarah.
The daughter everyone believed had died in a terrible apartment fire twenty-seven years ago.
Victoria slowly stepped closer.
"How old are you?"
"Twenty-three."
Victoria's fingers tightened around the ring.
The numbers matched perfectly.
Behind them, Chloe laughed nervously.
"Grandmother, it's just an old ring."
Victoria turned so sharply that Chloe immediately fell silent.
"Be quiet."
The authority in her voice shocked the entire Bennett family.
For the first time in years...
Victoria looked afraid.
She turned back toward Emily.
"I need you to come with me."
Emily blinked.
"I still have tables to serve."
"You don't work anymore tonight."
Victoria looked toward the restaurant manager.
"I'll pay for every shift she misses."
