CHAPTER 3 — The House Begins to Listen

Rosa should not have been in the security room.

But Lily was sick that night, coughing softly in her small bed, and Rosa needed distraction—anything to stop her mind from replaying the words her daughter said.

The technician left the monitor open.

“Just don’t touch anything,” he said.

Rosa didn’t plan to.

But then she saw it.

Staircase camera feed. Morning timestamp.

Margaret Whitmore walking.

Vivien behind her.

And Lily—tiny, barely visible—standing near the lower hallway holding her blocks.

Rosa’s breath stopped.

On the screen:

Margaret pauses.

Vivien reaches forward.

Not to catch her.

Not to help her.

To touch her shoulder—

Then a push.

Quick. Clean. Almost elegant.

Margaret falls out of frame.

Rosa stepped back so fast the chair scraped behind her.

Her hand covered her mouth.

“No…” she whispered.

Behind her, a voice came from the doorway.

Cold. Calm.

“You saw it too.”

Rosa froze.

Nathaniel Whitmore stood there.

May you like

He had not raised his voice.

He didn’t need to.
