CHAPTER 2 — The Man Who Didn’t Believe in Mistakes

Nathaniel Whitmore stood alone in his mother’s hospital room that night.

The machines beeped softly beside Margaret’s bed. Her wrist was wrapped in white bandages. Her face, usually sharp as steel, looked temporarily defeated.

“You didn’t fall,” he said quietly.

Margaret turned her head slightly.

“No.”

That was all she needed to say.

Nathaniel exhaled slowly.

Then he remembered Vivien’s voice.

“She slipped.”

Perfect. Controlled. Rehearsed.

He had spent his entire life reading boardrooms, contracts, enemies.

And yet this situation felt different.

Because lies normally broke when pressured.

Vivien’s didn’t.

They polished themselves.

His phone buzzed.

A message from home security:

“Laundry staff request: camera maintenance log from staircase zone?”

Nathaniel stared at it for a long moment.

Then he replied:

“Send everything.”
