Chapter 17 - MARIAN’S LAST SECRET
Grant returned to the penthouse with federal agents.
Marian did not run.
She was sitting at the kitchen table.
A sealed metal case rested in front of her.
“I wondered when Martin would finally tell you.”
Grant stared at her.
“How long have you known?”
“Twenty-two years.”
Claire looked devastated.
“You knew my father was alive?”
Marian nodded.
Claire stepped backward.
“You watched me mourn him.”
“I was protecting him.”
“From who?”
“Everyone.”
Grant’s voice hardened.
“Including Claire?”
Marian looked at him.
“Especially Claire.”
Then she opened the metal case.
Inside were ledgers.
Photographs.
Court files.
Adoption records.
Audio tapes.
Enough evidence to dismantle the entire network.
Marian explained that she had worked as Henry Bennett’s executive assistant before Grant inherited the company.
She discovered what Henry was doing.
Martin wanted to expose it.
Marian helped him fake his death because Henry had already ordered Rourke to kill him.
Then Grant met Claire years later.
Neither Marian nor Martin had planned it.
The son of Henry Bennett fell in love with the daughter of Martin Mercer.
Grant laughed bitterly.
“Somebody should have told us.”
“I wanted to.”
Marian cried.
“Martin begged me not to.”
“He believed your father would destroy both of you.”
Claire stared at the ledgers.
“So we were surrounded by people making decisions for us.”
Marian lowered her head.
“Yes.”
Grant thought of Victor.
Henry.
Eleanor.
Martin.
Marian.
Everyone had claimed secrecy was protection.
Every secret had created more damage.
“No more.”
Grant pushed the ledger toward Rachel.
“Everything goes to federal investigators.”
“No private deals.”
“No buried names.”
Marian nodded.
“That’s why I kept it.”
The evidence triggered raids across three states.
Judges retired in disgrace.
Attorneys were arrested.
Two adoption agencies were shut down.
Bank accounts were frozen.
Peter Caldwell’s daughter was recovered safely.
Evelyn Shaw agreed to testify in exchange for reduced charges.
Victor Hale faced kidnapping, fraud, conspiracy, money laundering, false imprisonment, and trafficking-related charges.
Helen Bennett faced most of the same.
Grant resigned permanently as CEO.
The board begged him to reconsider after investigators confirmed many of his signatures were forged.
He refused.
He sold controlling interests and established a compensation fund for victims.
But one personal problem remained.
Emma.
Emily.
The DNA test confirmed she was Grant and Claire’s biological daughter.
The Carters were shattered.
So were Grant and Claire.
They refused to turn the child into a custody trophy.
Therapists were brought in.
The families began meeting slowly.
Sophie met Emily first.
She gave her a purple bracelet.
Luke gave her half his chocolate bar.
Emily looked at Grant cautiously.
“Are you really my other dad?”
Grant smiled through tears.
“I’m your biological father.”
“But you already have a dad who loves you.”
Emily looked relieved.
Then she asked about Claire.
“Does that mean I have two moms too?”
Claire knelt beside her.
“If you want us.”
Emily thought about it.
Then she hugged Claire.
Grant believed the worst was finally over.
