Chapter 16 - CLAIRE’S FATHER

Claire nearly collapsed when she saw the image.

“Martin Mercer.”

Her father had supposedly died in a warehouse fire.

No body had ever been recovered.

Claire had been told identification was made through dental records.

Now she understood how easily records could be manipulated.

Grant looked at her.

“Was he involved?”

“I don’t know.”

Claire remembered her father as strict but loving.

A financial auditor.

A man obsessed with records.

A man who taught her that numbers never lied.

Owen uncovered the truth.

Martin Mercer had been Henry Bennett’s accountant.

He helped build the original network of shell companies.

Then he tried to leave.

Henry threatened Claire.

Martin staged his death and disappeared.

For twenty-two years he had hidden.

Grant felt no sympathy.

“Then why is he with Diane?”

Claire stared at the traffic image.

“Maybe he’s not helping her.”

Investigators traced the vehicle to a farmhouse.

Tactical teams surrounded it.

Grant, Claire, and Samuel Carter waited nearby.

Samuel paced constantly.

“That is my daughter.”

Grant understood the pain in his voice.

Biology did not erase seven years of parenting.

Grant approached him.

“No matter what happens, I’m not here to erase you.”

Samuel looked at him.

“I changed her diapers.”

“I held her when she had pneumonia.”

“She calls me Dad.”

Grant swallowed.

“I know.”

Samuel’s eyes filled.

“What happens when she finds out?”

“We make sure she learns she was loved by everyone who mattered.”

For the first time, the two fathers understood each other.

Agents entered the farmhouse.

Diane Hale was arrested in the kitchen.

Emily was found upstairs.

Safe.

Martin Mercer was in the basement.

Badly injured.

He had tried to stop Diane from leaving with Emily.

At the hospital, Claire stood beside her father’s bed.

Martin opened his eyes.

“You look like your mother.”

Claire cried.

“Why didn’t you come back?”

“Because Henry would have killed you.”

“He nearly did anyway.”

Martin began crying.

“I know.”

He admitted he had spent decades collecting proof against the Bennett network.

He had secretly followed Diane when he realized she was moving Emma.

But fear kept him silent too long.

Grant stood at the doorway.

Martin looked at him.

“I owe you an apology.”

Grant answered coldly.

“You owe your daughter one.”

Martin nodded.

Then he revealed the final piece.

Henry Bennett had not been the original mastermind.

Neither had Eleanor.

The network began with a group of judges, attorneys, developers, and adoption brokers.

Hundreds of families may have been affected.

Martin had kept the master ledger.

“Where?”

Grant asked.

Martin looked at Claire.

“I gave it to someone I trusted.”

Claire frowned.

“Who?”

Martin whispered.

“Marian Blake.”

Grant froze.

May you like

Marian had been working for the Bennetts before Grant ever joined the company.

And she had never told him she knew Martin Mercer was alive.
