Chapter 4: The Baby’s Name

Victor ran.

Emily followed despite his warning, one hand supporting her stomach as fear pushed her forward.

They reached the nursery just as the lights flickered back on.

Claire stood beside the crib that had not yet held the baby. In her hand was a small metal box she had torn from inside the wall.

Victor stopped in the doorway.

“Put it down.”

Claire’s eyes were red now.

“You don’t understand. I was supposed to have this life.”

Emily stepped forward.

“No,” she said quietly. “You were supposed to be family.”

For one second, Claire’s face cracked.

Then police sirens sounded outside.

Claire looked toward the window, trapped.

Victor moved closer.

The metal box slipped from her hand and hit the floor.

It opened.

Inside were recordings, signed documents, and a final video file from Victor’s father.

The truth was worse than anyone imagined.

Claire had not only tried to steal the inheritance.

She had forged medical records, bribed lawyers, and planned to have Emily declared mentally unstable after the baby was born.

The fall on the stairs was only the beginning.

But now it was over.

Police entered moments later.

Claire screamed Victor’s name as they took her away, but he never looked back.

Three weeks later, Emily gave birth to a healthy baby girl.

Victor held his daughter for the first time with tears in his eyes.

“What should we name her?” Emily whispered.

Victor looked at the sunrise beyond the hospital window.

Then he smiled.

“Grace,” he said. “Because we almost lost her… but she stayed.”

Months later, the Parker mansion was no longer cold.

The staircase was still there.

The chandelier still shone.

But the fear was gone.

And every night, when Emily carried Grace past the security camera, she no longer saw the place where someone tried to end their future.

She saw the place where the truth finally came to light.

And where a family survived.
