Chapter 4 – One Year Later

Exactly one year later...

Amy returned to the same hotel.

Not as a bride.

As the keynote speaker for a national conference on women rebuilding after betrayal and loss.

The ballroom looked different now.

Or perhaps she did.

The pain had softened into wisdom.

The anger had become peace.

She no longer wore white.

She wore a simple navy dress.

Around her neck rested the pearl pendant Aunt Rose had given her after the wedding.

"Sometimes," Amy told the audience, "the worst day of your life is only the first day of the life you were truly meant to live."

The room fell silent.

"In Room 237, I thought I had lost everything."

She smiled.

"I hadn't."

"I lost the people who were pretending to love me."

"And that made room for the people who actually would."

The audience rose in a standing ovation.

In the front row sat her parents.

Emma.

Linda.

And Aunt Rose, now eighty-three, smiling proudly through shining eyes.

Outside the ballroom, Amy passed the hallway leading toward Room 237.

She stopped for only a second.

Looked at the door.

Then quietly kept walking.

She never looked back again.

Because forgiveness had set her free.
