Chapter 1 – The Gathering

No one arrived quietly.

Within twenty minutes, Room 237 was crowded with people who had expected to celebrate a wedding and instead walked into a crime scene of broken promises.

Maverick's parents entered first.

His mother, Eleanor Bennett, still carried the small silver gift box that contained the heirloom cufflinks she had planned to give him before the ceremony.

She stopped after two steps.

The box slipped from her fingers.

It struck the hardwood floor with a hollow clink.

"No..."

Her whisper barely reached the room.

Behind her came his father, Richard Bennett.

A retired judge who rarely showed emotion.

He looked from the tangled white sheets...

to Maverick...

to Penelope...

then quietly removed his glasses.

His disappointment somehow felt louder than shouting ever could.

Guests continued arriving behind them.

His younger sister.

His godfather.

Two uncles.

Amy's parents.

Emma.

Even Linda, the wedding coordinator, still wearing her headset.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody needed to.

The evidence filled every corner of the suite.

Amy stood near the window, bouquet resting on a table now.

Her veil remained perfectly straight.

She looked less like a heartbroken bride...

and more like the only calm person inside a collapsing building.

Maverick finally found his voice.

"It happened once."

Silence.

"I swear."

"I made a mistake."

"I was going to tell Amy after the honeymoon."

Richard slowly looked at his son.

"You planned to begin your marriage with a lie?"

Maverick lowered his eyes.

No answer came.

Penelope finally spoke through tears.

"It wasn't planned..."

"It just..."

Amy interrupted softly.

"Stop."

Everyone turned toward her.

"I don't need details."

"I already know enough."

She reached into the pocket of her wedding gown once more.

This time she removed a folded envelope.

"I found this yesterday."

She handed it to Richard.

His hands unfolded the paper carefully.

Inside...

was a printed reservation confirmation.

Millbrook Inn.

Room 237.

Booked six weeks earlier.

Two guests.

Under Penelope's credit card.

The check-in time...

was the night before the wedding.

Every excuse died instantly.

Penelope covered her face.

Maverick closed his eyes.

May you like

There would be no explaining this away.

Only consequences.
