Chapter 1: The Closet Call

The thunder cracked again, shaking the Beverly Hills mansion like it was built from paper instead of marble and steel.
Seven-year-old Lily Mercer pressed herself deeper into the cedar closet, her small body wedged between hanging suits that still carried her father’s scent—smoke, rain, and danger wrapped in expensive cologne.
She wasn’t supposed to be here.
She knew that.
But she had seen enough.
Men moving through the house like they owned it.
Voices in the study that stopped the moment she came near.
Cassandra’s smile that never reached her eyes anymore.
And Mr. Wells… speaking about her like she was an object being moved, not a child breathing inside the same house.
So she did the only thing she could think of.
She stole the phone from the study.
Her fingers shook as she pressed the only number she knew by heart.
One ring.
Two.
Three.
Then—
“Who is this?”
A cold voice. Controlled. Dangerous.
Lily’s lips trembled.
“Daddy…”
Silence.
Then everything changed.
“Lily?”
She broke.
“They’re robbing you,” she whispered urgently. “And they’re going to sell me tonight.”
The line went still.
Across the world, Marcus Mercer stopped breathing.
In London, rain slid down glass walls as he stood motionless over a desk filled with legal files that could collapse governments if released.
But none of that mattered now.
Only her voice mattered.
“Where are you?” he asked.
“In your closet.”
A pause.
“Is the door locked?”
“Yes.”
“Good,” Marcus said softly. “Don’t open it. Don’t speak to anyone unless it’s me. Do you understand?”
Lily nodded even though he couldn’t see her.
“Yes.”
Then—
Three knocks.
From outside the bedroom.
A woman’s voice, sweet and careful.
“Lily? Sweetheart, are you awake?”
Cassandra Vale.
Lily froze so hard it hurt.
Marcus heard it too.
And in that instant, something inside him shifted.
Not anger.
Decision.
“Lily,” he said quietly. “Whatever happens next, stay silent.”
“But—”
“I’m coming home.”
A pause.

Then Marcus added, voice lower now.
“And God help anyone standing in my way.”
