Chapter 5: Ashes and Freedom

The trial lasted four days.

It didn’t need more.

Documents. Bank transfers. Medical records. Offshore payments.

Every truth Eleanor buried in pain came back sharpened.

Guilty.

Guilty.

Guilty.

Twenty-five years.

No parole.

No empire.

No escape.

The Montauk cliffs were quiet the morning Eleanor returned.

Fog rolled over the ocean like memory refusing to fade.

Julian stood behind her.

“I loved you,” he said.

Eleanor didn’t turn around immediately.

When she did, her face was calm.

Empty of everything that once burned inside her.

“No,” she said softly. “You loved an idea of me.”

She stepped closer to the edge.

“I died two years ago, Julian. I just forgot to leave.”

A beat.

Then she walked past him.

Into the mist.

The wind swallowed her footsteps.

And for the first time since the fall of her old life, Eleanor didn’t look back.

Only forward.
