Chapter 4: The Hunted

Three months later, the empire was gone.
Frozen accounts. Seized assets. Names erased from boardrooms that once bowed to hers.
Victoria lived in a motel where the neon sign flickered like it was dying slowly on purpose.
Every night, she checked the locks three times.
Every sound became Eleanor.
Every shadow became judgment.
Then the power went out.
Darkness swallowed the room.
Victoria grabbed a letter opener from the desk, hands shaking violently.
“Eleanor!” she screamed into the black. “Stop hiding!”
A soft click answered her.
Light appeared.
Not from the ceiling.
From a phone.
Eleanor sat in the corner chair like she had been there the entire time.
Calm. Still. Watching.
“I’m not here to kill you,” she said.
Victoria laughed nervously.
“Then why are you here?”
Eleanor leaned forward slightly.
“Because I wanted you to feel it.”
“The waiting.”
“The fear.”
“The certainty that something is coming… and you can’t stop it.”
She tilted her head.
“Do you feel it now?”
Victoria’s hand tightened around the weapon.
But she didn’t move.
For the first time, she understood—
May you like
she wasn’t being hunted.
She was being studied.
