Chapter 5 - THE MAN ON THE PHONE

The man’s name was Aaron Cole.

I learned that from Melissa’s phone records during discovery.

James warned me not to contact him.

I had no intention of doing so.

The records showed calls stretching back nine months.

Long before Melissa started leaving our daughter with the baby.

That meant the affair likely began during her pregnancy.

I thought that would devastate me.

Instead, I felt strangely numb.

The affair had become background noise.

What mattered was where those meetings took place.

Credit card records showed restaurants.

A hotel.

Coffee shops.

Then an address appeared repeatedly.

A townhouse twenty minutes from our home.

Aaron’s.

James looked at the timeline.

“Some visits overlap the days your daughter missed school.”

“I know.”

He looked at me.

“You okay?”

“No.”

But I was learning that “no” did not stop the next thing from needing to be done.

Aaron eventually received a subpoena.

His attorney responded.

Then something unexpected happened.

Aaron offered to cooperate.

Not because he liked me.

Because he said Melissa had lied to him too.

According to Aaron, Melissa told him we were separated.

She said I was sleeping in another room.

She said I knew she was seeing someone.

She even told him the baby was usually with a nanny.

A nanny.

My seven-year-old daughter.

When Aaron learned the truth, he wanted distance.

His attorney provided messages.

One made my stomach turn.

Aaron had asked:

Who watches the kids when you come here?

Melissa responded:

My oldest is basically a little mom already.

Aaron wrote:

Isn’t she like seven?

Melissa answered:

She likes helping.

That lie was almost worse than the affair itself.

She likes helping.

I remembered my daughter’s swollen wrist.

Her trembling knees.

Her asking if she was bad at being a sister.

Then Aaron sent another message.

Maybe hire someone.

Melissa replied:

Why pay when I have free help?

I stopped reading.

James closed the file.

“That matters.”

I looked at him.

“To custody?”

“Yes.”

“To me?”

He paused.

“It confirms intent.”

Exactly.

Melissa had not panicked one day and made a terrible decision.

May you like

She had built a routine around exploiting our daughter because it was convenient.

The affair merely gave her somewhere to go.
