Chapter 12 - AARON’S FINAL MESSAGE
Aaron sent one final statement through his attorney.
He was leaving the state.
He had ended contact with Melissa.
I did not care about the romance.
But his final screenshots mattered.
In one conversation, Aaron asked whether Melissa felt guilty leaving the children.
She answered:
Sometimes.
Then:
But if I stay home all day, I’ll disappear.
Aaron replied:
Then hire help.
Melissa:
He’ll ask questions about money.
Aaron:
Your husband?
Melissa:
Yes.
Aaron:
Then tell him you need help.
Melissa:
He’ll think I can’t handle motherhood.
I stared at that line.
For the first time, I understood another piece.
Melissa had built a performance.
Full-time mother.
Capable.
Sacrificing.
Independent.
She told me she was exhausted because she did everything.
I praised her.
Thanked her.
Sent flowers to the house.
Told coworkers how incredible she was.
Meanwhile, our daughter was doing part of the work.
Melissa feared admitting she needed help because she wanted credit for not needing it.
The lie became an identity.
That did not excuse anything.
But it explained why she hid available options.
She wanted freedom and admiration at the same time.
Aaron’s final message to her read:
You need to tell your husband before someone gets hurt.
Melissa replied:
Nobody will get hurt.
They know what they’re doing.
Again.
Children framed as competent enough to absorb adult risk.
Then there was one final screenshot.
The day I came home early.
At 5:14 p.m., Melissa texted Aaron:
The little babysitter keeps calling.
Should I go back?
Aaron responded:
Yes.
Go home.
Melissa:
She’s dramatic.
I put the phone down.
At 5:16, my daughter had called her mother twice.
No answer.
At 5:20, she called me.
The phone call that changed everything happened because Melissa deliberately ignored hers.
That fact destroyed the final excuse.
