Chapter 8 - Vanessa Vale

Vanessa’s background looked polished from a distance.

Private schools.

University in Boston.

Luxury marketing consultant.

Daughter of Conrad Vale, founder of Vale Meridian Freight.

A closer look was different.

Her company had received payments from North Star-linked businesses.

Her father’s freight network moved cargo through Wyoming, Montana, and Alberta.

Three seized weapons shipments had traveled inside containers subcontracted through Vale Meridian.

Conrad claimed ignorance.

Maybe.

Vanessa was harder to explain.

Her phone records included direct contact with Cole Rainer.

The man who appeared near my undercover motel.

Priya showed Marcus.

Then investigators obtained Vanessa’s financials.

Four days before my location was compromised, she received two hundred thousand dollars from a North Star shell company.

The reference.

CONSULTING.

Then she transferred fifty thousand to an account Grant controlled privately.

I stared at the records during my witness briefing.

“He sold me out for fifty thousand dollars?”

Priya shook her head.

“Possibly more.”

“That is only what we have.”

I felt nothing at first.

Then laughter came out.

Wrong laughter.

Exhausted.

Ugly.

Grant earned more than that in a good month.

This had never been about needing money.

It was about freedom from me.

Freedom to be with Vanessa.

Freedom to control our assets.

Maybe freedom from a wife who would eventually discover his business connections.

Then investigators searched the trash recovered from our home.

They found shredded drafts of a divorce petition.

Grant had prepared it before I left.

Grounds.

Abandonment.

Emotional cruelty.

Dangerous lifestyle.

One proposed custody filing said my occupation created an “unreasonable risk of maternal disappearance or death.”

He had written that before my assignment began.

Then came something worse.

A life-insurance policy.

Three million dollars.

Grant had increased coverage on me six weeks before deployment.

Beneficiary.

Grant Carlisle.

I looked at Marcus.

“He knew where I was going.”

“Not exactly.”

“He knew enough.”

Marcus nodded.

The policy alone was not evidence of murder.

But combined with North Star communication, it mattered.

Then Caleb arrived with another recovered clip.

Vanessa stood in Lily’s room.

Grant leaned against the door.

Vanessa asked.

“What if Evelyn actually makes it home?”

Grant answered.

“Then we make sure she loses Lily.”

Vanessa smiled.

“And after that?”

May you like

Grant walked toward her.

“After that, she’ll wish she stayed at the border.”
