Chapter 12 - The Hidden Account

Grant’s financial fraud ran deeper than North Star.
Priya discovered he had created a private account two years earlier.
Money from Carlisle Development flowed into it through fake consulting invoices.
Vanessa’s company received part.
Grant retained part.
At first, it looked like ordinary embezzlement.
Then Priya found my name.
A file labeled.
E.C. CONTINGENCY.
Inside were projections.
Divorce settlement.
Custody expenses.
Private investigators.
Reputation management.
Psychological evaluation.
Grant had budgeted for destroying my credibility.
One invoice came from a private intelligence firm.
They had tracked me for almost a year.
Photographed me leaving federal buildings.
Meeting male colleagues.
Returning late from work.
None of the photographs showed misconduct.
But cropped correctly, they could imply anything.
One picture showed Marcus hugging me after an agent’s funeral.
Grant had labeled it.
POTENTIAL AFFAIR EVIDENCE.
I laughed when I saw it.
Then stopped.
He had been building a story.
Not truth.
A story.
Just like he tried with Lily.
Mommy left.
Mommy chose work.
Mommy is dangerous.
Mommy has another man.
Every fact was only useful if it could be turned against me.
Priya asked.
“When did your marriage start changing?”
I thought.
“After Lily was born.”
But that was not true.
The control began earlier.
Who I met.
How late I worked.
Why my salary went into a separate account.
Why I needed a government phone he could not access.
I had called it insecurity.
Then love.
Then stress.
We are very good at renaming things when the real name frightens us.
Priya showed me another transaction.
Twenty-five thousand dollars to a company called Silver Child Consulting.
“What is that?”
She looked grim.
“A custody strategy firm.”
Grant hired them four months before my operation.
They advised parents in high-conflict divorces.
One document contained a recommendation.
Establish pattern of maternal absence before filing.
I stared at the words.
My federal deployment had not created Grant’s plan.
It gave him an opportunity.
Then Lily’s birthday appeared in his calendar.
Not party planning.
Legal timing.
FILE AFTER E. RETURNS IF NECESSARY.

He had expected to hand me divorce papers when I came home.
Instead, I opened the door first.
