Chapter 5 - CELESTE’S STORY

Celeste arrived at the police station wearing a pale gray suit.

Her hair was tied back.

She had removed her wedding ring.

Her attorney described her as a frightened wife trapped between two powerful brothers.

She admitted locking Evelyn’s door.

She called it a safety measure.

She admitted limiting food.

She called it a doctor-approved diet.

She admitted using the feather duster.

She claimed Evelyn attacked first.

Then she accused Rosa.

According to Celeste, Rosa discovered the trust and attempted to steal from it.

Celeste claimed she and Thomas moved money only to protect the assets from the caregiver.

The explanation was absurd.

It was also carefully designed.

Rosa had entered the house under incomplete pretenses.

Her father had been accused of theft.

She had secretly photographed documents.

Celeste believed those facts could make an innocent woman look guilty.

Detective Brooks asked why Celeste planned to fly to Lisbon with Thomas.

Celeste said she feared me.

“Marcus has a temper.”

“Did he ever strike you?”

“No.”

“Threaten you?”

“No.”

“Prevent you from leaving?”

“No.”

“Then what did you fear?”

Celeste looked toward the interview-room camera.

“His influence.”

She understood how to make power itself appear abusive when the person holding it opposed her.

I gave police every recording without speaking publicly.

Celeste’s attorney released a statement first.

He described me as a wealthy husband using hidden surveillance to punish a wife during a marital dispute.

News vans arrived outside the hospital.

Photographs of our house appeared online.

Commentators debated whether Evelyn’s bruises came from falls.

Some questioned why I had remained in Australia for nine months.

That question was fair.

I had accepted a long-term expansion project.

I called home every day at first.

Then the calls became shorter.

Celeste told me Mom’s confusion worsened after sunset.

She said video conversations upset her.

Thomas confirmed the diagnosis.

I wanted to believe them because returning home would have meant abandoning the project.

I had chosen the explanation that protected my career.

No court could punish that selfishness.

I would carry it anyway.

The company board scheduled an emergency meeting.

Thomas’s arrest created instability.

He controlled finances, payroll, and several international accounts.

Directors wanted me to return immediately as acting chief executive.

I refused.

“My mother is in the hospital.”

One director warned that the company might collapse.

I looked at the screen.

“Then appoint an independent executive.”

“Hale Medical has always been led by a Hale.”

“That tradition helped Thomas hide fraud.”

The board fell silent.

I authorized a forensic audit.

Every Thomas-controlled account was frozen.

Within hours, auditors discovered another forty million dollars missing.

The money had moved through false suppliers created after Luis Martinez’s dismissal.

Rosa’s father had been right.

The theft began years earlier.

Celeste received regular payments through a consulting company.

Dr. Ward received hundreds of thousands through a medical-research fund.

Someone else received the largest payment.

A retired judge named Walter Crane.

Crane had been selected to hear Evelyn’s incompetency petition.

Thomas and Celeste had purchased the outcome before filing the case.

The conspiracy reached beyond our house.

Then my mother woke fully for the first time.

She asked to speak with me alone.

Her voice was weak.

“There is another box.”

May you like

“Where?”

“Your father’s grave.”
