Chapter 4 - ROSA’S SECRET

Rosa woke late that morning.
Her left eye was swollen.
A white bandage covered the stitches above her eyebrow.
I sat beside her hospital bed.
She looked frightened when she saw me.
“Your mother?”
“Stable.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“I should have called you sooner.”
“You tried.”
“Celeste took my phone.”
“She said your company would have me arrested for stealing.”
I thought of Thomas’s final words.
“Why did he tell me to ask why you were really in the house?”
Rosa looked toward the door.
Then she reached beneath her pillow and removed a photograph.
It showed a younger Rosa standing beside an older man in a maintenance uniform.
“That is my father.”
His name was Luis Martinez.
He had worked for Hale Medical Technologies for twenty-three years.
He died four years earlier after being accused of stealing company equipment.
Thomas had ordered the investigation.
Luis lost his pension and health insurance before his death.
Rosa never believed the accusation.
“My father kept copies of company invoices.”
“He said money was disappearing.”
“He tried to tell your father.”
“Then Richard died.”
“Thomas called my father a thief.”
Rosa applied for the caregiver position because Evelyn once sent flowers to Luis’s funeral.
She believed my mother knew the truth.
At first, Rosa only wanted information.
Then she saw Celeste’s treatment.
“She began locking Mrs. Hale inside the sitting room.”
“She removed the telephone.”
“She told the staff your mother was violent.”
“Most employees quit.”
“Others were fired.”
“Why did you stay?”
Rosa looked at me.
“Because your mother remembered my father.”
Evelyn told Rosa that Luis had discovered Thomas moving money through fake suppliers.
The stolen equipment was planted inside his garage.
My father intended to clear Luis’s name.
He died before completing the audit.
Thomas buried the investigation.
Rosa found part of the evidence inside the green hatbox.
That was why Thomas attacked her in the laundry room.
“He hit you?”
“He pushed me against the wall.”
“I woke on the floor.”
“Celeste told me I had fallen.”
The hidden footage confirmed it.
Rosa remained because leaving would have left Evelyn completely alone.
She began hiding food inside laundry baskets.
She gave Mom water during baths.
She photographed bruises using a small camera.
Those images were stored on another memory card.
“Where is it?”
“Inside the feather duster.”
The wooden handle was hollow.
Rosa had hidden the card beneath the lower cap.
Celeste used that same object to beat them without knowing it contained evidence.
Police searched the garage.
The feather duster had been thrown into a trash bag.
The memory card survived.
Its files included close photographs of my mother’s injuries, Celeste’s pill bottles, and Thomas’s forged documents.
One video showed Dr. Ward examining Evelyn.
Mom answered every question correctly.
She named the president.
She stated the date.
She described the trust.
Dr. Ward turned off his recorder.
Then he told Celeste:
“She is still legally competent.”
Celeste replied:
“Then make her less competent.”
The doctor stared at the medication bottle.
“I will need another week.”
Rosa had captured the entire exchange.
I felt physically sick.
They were not waiting for Mom’s mind to fail.
They were manufacturing failure.
Detective Brooks entered with more news.
Celeste had surrendered voluntarily.
She claimed Thomas manipulated her.
She said she was afraid of him.
May you like
She also claimed Rosa was the mastermind behind the missing trust money.
Celeste intended to make the wounded caregiver her final scapegoat.
