Chapter 18 - THE NIGHT BEFORE TWELVE

Charles Sterling was arrested.
He still denied ordering Arthur’s death.
He denied Samuel Hayes.
He denied planning Leo’s murder.
Then prosecutors played the recording.
His attorneys stopped speaking.
Eleanor began negotiating.
Crowe began negotiating faster.
Each betrayal exposed another.
Charles had built the financial network.
Eleanor controlled the foundation.
Crowe erased records.
But the helicopter murder remained complicated.
Charles had approved the payment.
Eleanor had arranged the mechanic.
Crowe had buried the report.
All three were responsible.
Richard spent the following week preparing to resign as chairman.
Reporters called it the collapse of a dynasty.
Leo called it Wednesday.
His twelfth birthday arrived under police protection.
There was no ballroom.
No foundation gala.
No two hundred guests.
Leo asked for pizza.
Chocolate cake.
Clara.
Richard.
Dr. Monroe.
His physical therapist.
And three children he had met at the rehabilitation center.
At 6:00 p.m., a representative from Boston arrived with the founder trust documents.
Leo placed his fingerprint on a small scanner.
The system verified him.
Three billion dollars in founder assets transferred into a protected trust established by Arthur.
Richard would not control it.
No Sterling relative would.
An independent fiduciary board would manage the assets until Leo reached adulthood.
Arthur had thought of everything.
Almost.
After dinner, Leo opened his presents.
Richard gave him a handmade wooden sailboat.
Clara gave him a new photograph frame.
Inside was Arthur’s Polaroid.
FOR WHEN THEY FORGET.
Leo smiled.
“I think they remember now.”
Clara looked at him.
“Do you?”
“Yeah.”
“What?”
“That Dad loved me.”
She swallowed.
“He did.”
Richard looked away, wiping one eye.
For the first time since the fire, the room felt peaceful.
Then Detective Reeves arrived.
Clara immediately knew something was wrong.
“What happened?”
He placed a sealed evidence bag on the table.
Inside was an old cassette tape.
“Workers found this inside the wall behind Arthur’s study.”
“What's on it?”
“We don't know.”
“No player.”
Richard stood.
“I have one.”
They found an old cassette machine in Sterling Manor’s surviving archive.
The recording began with static.
Then Arthur’s voice.
“If Leo hears this, everything else has already failed.”
Leo moved closer.
Arthur continued.
“Charles is dangerous.”
“Eleanor is angry.”
“Crowe is weak.”
“But none of them frightens me most.”
Clara felt cold.
Arthur took a breath.
“The person I fear is the one nobody will investigate.”
The tape clicked.
May you like
Then Arthur said a name.
Richard’s face went completely white.
