Chapter 11 - THE BLUE BOAT

The wooden sailboat was found in Eleanor’s Newport storage unit.

She had kept hundreds of Arthur’s possessions.

Clothes.

Files.

Photographs.

Awards.

Even his childhood baseball glove.

The blue boat sat inside a sealed box marked DONATE.

Detective Reeves opened it at the police station.

A compartment beneath the miniature deck held a memory card.

Arthur had recorded five videos.

The first began six weeks before his death.

He sat inside his study.

He looked tired.

“If Leo ever sees this, I want him to understand one thing.”

Leo leaned closer to the screen.

“I love you.”

The boy immediately began crying.

Clara reached for his hand.

Arthur continued.

“You are not a burden.”

“You are not damaged property.”

“You are my son.”

Leo covered his face.

For years, he had lived beneath Eleanor’s words.

Arthur’s tragic burden.

Now his father was reaching across six years to erase them.

The second recording changed tone.

Arthur discussed missing money.

More than seventy million dollars had disappeared through Sterling charitable foundations.

Shell companies received contracts.

The companies connected back to Miles Crowe.

The third recording named Eleanor.

“I confronted my sister yesterday.”

Arthur looked furious.

“She says I’m becoming paranoid.”

“Maybe I am.”

“But she knew details she should not know.”

The fourth video showed Arthur holding a maintenance report.

“If anything happens to my helicopter, inspect the rear hydraulic control assembly.”

Richard stood.

That detail had never appeared in the official investigation.

The fifth recording was made the night before Arthur died.

He looked directly into the camera.

“Tomorrow I’m flying to Boston.”

“I intend to give federal investigators everything.”

Clara stopped breathing.

Arthur continued.

“If I don’t make it there, Miles Crowe knows why.”

The screen went black.

Silence filled the room.

Then Detective Reeves received a message.

Crowe’s vehicle had been found near a marina.

Abandoned.

Inside were two passports.

Cash.

And a ferry ticket.

Departure time.

Forty minutes.

Police rushed toward the waterfront.

Clara remained with Leo.

Richard went with Reeves.

Twenty-three minutes later, Clara’s phone rang.

Richard.

She answered.

“Did you find him?”

“No.”

His voice sounded wrong.

“What happened?”

“Crowe wasn't here.”

Clara stood.

“Then where is he?”

Richard breathed heavily.

“He left something in the car.”

“What?”

“A photograph of Leo sleeping in this hospital.”

Clara turned toward the door.

At that exact moment, the lights on Leo’s floor went out.
