Chapter 4: The Cut That Changed Everything

The shears lowered.

Not to the dress.

To the seam between illusion and truth.

Eleanor cut once.

A sharp, clean slice through the fabric.

But something unexpected happened.

A folded document fell out from inside the gown lining.

Clara didn’t touch it.

Eleanor did.

She opened it.

Her expression changed for the first time.

Just slightly.

A fracture in control.

It was a legal agreement.

Signed years ago.

Vance Bridal Intellectual Property Transfer — Temporary Custody: Clara Vance.

Eleanor whispered, almost to herself:

“…She approved this?”

Clara stepped forward.

“I didn’t steal anything,” she said. “You gave it to me.”

Silence swallowed the room.

Even the security guards shifted uncomfortably.

Then Eleanor laughed once.

Not amused.

Not warm.

Dangerous.

“You think this is about approval?”

She looked up.

And for the first time—

May you like

her voice broke the polished surface.

“This is about survival.”
