CHAPTER 3 — The Family That Needed Her

Within five minutes, the wedding was no longer a wedding.

Phones lit up across the ballroom.

Executives whispered into corners.

Guests who had been laughing over champagne suddenly looked nervous.

The Whitmore name was powerful.

But power built on borrowed money was fragile.

And Emily’s family held the match.

Daniel followed Emily into the side hall, away from the crowd.

“Emily, listen to me.”

She kept walking.

He blocked her path.

“I made a mistake.”

Emily looked at him.

“No. You made a choice.”

Daniel’s polished mask slipped.

“You don’t understand the pressure I’m under.”

Emily let out a small breath.

“There it is.”

“What?”

“The speech where you explain why humiliating me was necessary.”

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“My mother pushed this. Natalie’s family offered connections. The board was worried about your father controlling too much after the merger.”

Emily stared at him.

“So you planned to marry me, use my family’s money, and replace me emotionally before the honeymoon?”

Daniel didn’t answer fast enough.

Emily nodded.

“Thank you for finally being honest.”

Behind them, Victoria stormed into the hall.

“This can still be fixed,” she said. “Emily, you will walk back in there, smile, and finish the ceremony.”

Emily almost laughed.

“You still think you can order me around?”

Victoria stepped closer.

“I built families like yours into society. Your father has money, yes. But we have legacy.”

Charles Hart entered behind her.

“No, Victoria. You have debt.”

Victoria froze.

Charles handed Daniel a tablet.

On the screen were numbers.

Red numbers.

Collapsed deals.

Hidden loans.

Emergency guarantees.

Emily’s signature nowhere.

Daniel’s face drained.

Charles said, “Your mother told investors my daughter had already approved the marriage-linked funding package.”

Emily turned to Victoria.

“You used my name?”

Victoria’s silence was enough.

Daniel stared at his mother.

“Mom?”

Victoria’s eyes flashed.

“I did what was necessary.”

Emily stepped forward.

“You forged my approval.”

Victoria lifted her chin.

“I protected my family.”

Emily’s voice turned ice-cold.

“No. You sold mine.”

Mr. Calloway appeared at the hall entrance.

“Miss Emily,” he said, “the board is on the line.”

Emily took the phone.

Daniel reached for her.

“Please. Just wait.”

Emily looked at him one last time.

For a moment, she saw the man she had wanted to love.

The man who had held her hand in the rain.

The man who had promised her she would never be alone in his world.

Then she saw the man who had left her on the floor.

She lifted the phone.

“This is Emily Hart.”

A pause.

Then she said clearly:

“Terminate the Whitmore agreement.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Victoria whispered, “No…”

Emily didn’t blink.

“And prepare legal action.”

The hall went silent.

Then Mr. Calloway’s phone buzzed.

He looked down.

His expression changed.

“Miss Emily…”

She turned.

“What is it?”

He hesitated.

Then handed her the screen.

A security video had just arrived.

From inside Victoria Whitmore’s private office.

Emily pressed play.

And what she saw made even her father go still.
