CHAPTER 2 — The Name Behind the Bride

Daniel grabbed Emily’s wrist.

Not hard enough to hurt.

Just hard enough to remind her who he thought he was.

“Don’t do this in public,” he said under his breath.

Emily looked down at his hand.

Then back at his face.

“Let go.”

Daniel didn’t.

So Mr. Calloway moved.

One quiet step.

Then another.

He didn’t raise his voice. He didn’t need to.

“Mr. Whitmore,” he said, “remove your hand from Miss Hart.”

Guests whispered.

Hart.

The name landed like thunder.

Most people knew Emily as Emily Hart, quiet daughter of an old-money family who avoided cameras.

What they didn’t know was what that name controlled.

Hart Global Holdings.

Private banks.

Energy contracts.

Real estate portfolios.

And the emergency loan keeping Whitmore Industries alive.

Daniel slowly released her.

Victoria forced a laugh.

“This is ridiculous. Emily, you’re emotional. Brides get overwhelmed.”

Emily looked at her.

“No. Brides get nervous. Brides get happy. Brides get scared.”

She took one step closer.

“They don’t get shoved aside for another woman before the vows.”

Natalie’s smile vanished.

“I didn’t—”

Emily raised one hand.

“Don’t.”

The word was soft.

But Natalie shut her mouth.

Mr. Calloway opened his portfolio and removed a slim black folder.

Daniel saw it and turned pale.

“What is that?”

Emily didn’t answer.

Mr. Calloway did.

“The termination clause.”

Victoria’s face tightened.

“There is no termination clause.”

“There is,” Emily said. “My father added it after your family demanded access to our private investment network before the wedding.”

Daniel stared at her.

“You knew?”

Emily almost smiled.

“Daniel, you brought your mistress to my wedding and thought I was the foolish one?”

A wave of shock rolled through the guests.

Natalie stepped back.

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“Careful.”

Emily stepped closer.

“No. You be careful.”

Her eyes shone, but not with tears anymore.

“With one phone call, my father freezes every bridge loan, cancels every pending acquisition, and calls back every favor your mother used my name to collect.”

Victoria’s mask cracked.

“You spoiled little—”

“Enough.”

The voice came from the ballroom entrance.

Everyone turned.

A tall man in a charcoal suit stood beneath the archway, silver hair brushed back, his expression unreadable.

Charles Hart.

Emily’s father.

Daniel swallowed.

Victoria went completely still.

Charles walked down the aisle slowly.

He stopped beside his daughter and looked at the scattered roses on the floor.

Then at Daniel.

Then at Victoria.

“My daughter came here to become family,” Charles said.

His voice was calm.

That made it worse.

“And you put her on the floor.”

Daniel tried to recover.

“Mr. Hart, this is a misunderstanding.”

Charles looked at Emily.

“Is it?”

Emily held his gaze.

“No.”

Charles nodded once.

Then he turned to Mr. Calloway.

“Make the call.”

Victoria stepped forward, panic breaking through her elegance.

“Charles, wait. We can discuss this privately.”

Charles looked at her like she was a stranger.

“No, Victoria.”

He picked up Emily’s fallen bouquet and placed it gently in her hands.

“You wanted a public wedding.”

May you like

His eyes hardened.

“Now you’ll get a public ending.”
