Chapter 3 – The Man Behind Every Marriage

The reception had barely begun when Daniel quietly excused himself.

Olivia watched him disappear toward the terrace.

Thirty seconds later—

She followed.

She found him standing alone overlooking the city skyline.

"You've been distant all day."

Daniel smiled faintly.

"I've been waiting."

"For what?"

"For him."

Olivia froze.

A familiar voice answered from behind her.

"You shouldn't have followed him."

She turned.

The elderly gentleman from the fourth row stood only a few feet away.

Richard Ashcroft.

International philanthropist.

Billionaire investor.

Family friend to governors, judges, and senators.

The man everyone admired.

The man no one questioned.

He smiled warmly.

Then looked at Daniel.

"You've done excellent work earning her trust."

Olivia frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

Daniel slowly removed the hidden microphone from inside his jacket.

Richard's smile disappeared.

"You..."

Daniel spoke calmly.

"Every conversation you've had with Olivia during the last ninety days has been recorded."

Olivia stepped backward.

"What?"

Daniel looked directly into her eyes.

"You were never choosing wealthy husbands."

"You were recruiting them."

Richard finally laughed.

A tired laugh.

"I wondered how long it would take."

He reached into his pocket.

Not for a weapon.

For another envelope.

Inside were photographs of dozens of couples.

Every woman different.

Every groom wealthy.

Every ending identical.

Dead.

Divorced.

Missing.

Bankrupt.

Richard had built an empire by turning marriage into organized financial fraud.

Olivia's face lost every trace of color.

"You told me..."

"...that I was special?" Richard interrupted.

"You were useful."

Police sirens echoed outside.

The ballroom doors burst open.

Federal agents flooded the reception.

Richard never ran.

He simply smiled.

"I suppose every empire ends eventually."

Handcuffs clicked around his wrists.

Olivia collapsed into a chair.

For the first time in years—

She wasn't pretending to cry.
