Chapter 12 – Box 317

The ruins of Saint Agnes still smoldered when Alessandro's convoy crossed the state line before dawn.
No one spoke during the six-hour drive to Chicago.
The Raven Accounts ledger rested inside a locked steel case beside Marco.
Emma slept with her head on Sophia's lap, still holding Bunny close.
Every few minutes, Alessandro glanced at the small brass key in his hand.
317.
Whatever waited inside that safe-deposit box had been important enough for Arthur Bennett to protect...
Important enough for Daniel Alvarez to die for...
And important enough for the Raven Society to destroy an entire church.
The Lake Shore Private Bank occupied the top two floors of an elegant limestone building overlooking the Chicago River.
Its reputation had been built on one promise:
Absolute discretion.
The bank manager, Edward Collins, greeted Alessandro personally.
"Mr. Duca, we're honored to assist you."
Alessandro placed the brass key on the desk.
"I need access to Box 317."
Edward's polite smile faded.
"I'll need to verify ownership."
He inserted the key into a secure database.
A moment later, his eyebrows rose.
"That's... unusual."
"What is?"
"The box isn't registered under a person's name."
"Then whose?"
Edward swallowed.
"It's registered under a trust."
"What trust?"
He looked at the screen again.
The Raven Heritage Trust.
Marco and Alessandro exchanged a silent glance.
Ten minutes later, they entered the underground vault.
Rows of steel deposit boxes stretched in every direction.
Edward stopped before one marked 317.
He inserted the master key.
Alessandro inserted the brass key.
The lock clicked.
The drawer slid open.
Inside were only three items.
A leather-bound journal.
An old pocket watch.
And a sealed envelope addressed in elegant handwriting.
To Alessandro Duca.
His heartbeat quickened.
"My name..."
He carefully broke the wax seal.
Inside was a letter.
Written by his father.
My son,
If you are reading this, I failed to stop them.
The Raven Society has existed for generations.
Its greatest weapon is not money.
It is loyalty bought through fear.
I discovered the identity of their leader.
I hid that name where only one person would know to look.
Not in this box.
Not in the ledger.
But inside the watch.
Alessandro stared at the old silver pocket watch lying in the drawer.
His hands trembled as he picked it up.
The watch looked ordinary.
Until Marco noticed something.
"The back plate."
"What about it?"
"It's thicker than it should be."
Using a small screwdriver from his toolkit, Marco carefully removed the rear cover.
Inside was a folded strip of yellowed paper.
Alessandro unfolded it.
One name.
One signature.
One photograph.
The room fell silent.
"No..."
Marco whispered.
"It can't be."
The photograph showed a much younger Alessandro's father shaking hands with...
Senator Charles Whitmore.
The man who would later become one of the most powerful political figures in the country.
Beneath the photograph, in Alessandro's father's handwriting, were seven words:
He doesn't serve the Ravens. He commands them.
Before anyone could speak—
Edward Collins burst into the vault.
His face had gone pale.
"Mr. Duca!"
Marco immediately stepped in front of Alessandro.
"What happened?"
"The building's security system just detected armed men entering through the parking garage."
"How many?"
"At least twelve."
Marco cursed under his breath.
"They followed us."
The bank's alarms began blaring.
Steel security doors started descending over the exits.
Edward looked panicked.
"The vault will seal automatically in sixty seconds."
Marco made a decision.
"If we're trapped underground, we're dead."
He grabbed the journal, the photograph, the letter, and the watch.
"Move!"
As they reached the main lobby, the first shots rang out.
Customers screamed.
Glass shattered.
Masked gunmen stormed through the revolving doors.
One shouted,
"Take the ledger!"
Another pointed toward Alessandro.
"Kill him!"
Marco pushed Alessandro behind a marble pillar.
"Get Sophia and Emma out the back!"
Sophia grabbed Emma's hand and ran toward the emergency exit.
Halfway there, Emma suddenly stopped.
"No!"
Sophia pulled harder.
"We have to go!"
Emma shook her head.
"Bunny!"
Her stuffed rabbit had fallen near the reception desk.
Sophia looked back.
The toy lay only a few feet away.
But so did one of the gunmen.
Without thinking, Sophia ran for it.
She snatched Bunny from the floor—
The gunman turned.
He raised his rifle.
Sophia froze.
Then—
Bang!
The gunman collapsed.
A single precise shot.
Not from Marco.
Not from bank security.
From someone outside.
The remaining attackers immediately looked toward the shattered front entrance.
Their confidence vanished.
One whispered in panic,
"He's here..."
Another dropped his weapon.
"No..."
"We were told he wouldn't come."
A deep voice echoed from the entrance.
"You were told many lies."
A tall man in a dark overcoat stepped through the broken glass.
His silver hair caught the afternoon light.
His face remained calm.
Almost expressionless.
He wasn't carrying a rifle.
Only a simple black pistol.
Within seconds...
Three more attackers fell.
Each with a single perfectly placed shot.
The survivors retreated without firing another round.
One even abandoned a wounded teammate.
Marco watched in disbelief.
"Who is he?"
Alessandro stared at the stranger.
Slowly...
Recognition spread across his face.
"I don't believe it..."
The silver-haired man lowered his weapon.
Then looked directly at Alessandro.
"It's been a long time."
Alessandro's voice was barely a whisper.
"Uncle Gabriel..."
Marco frowned.
"You told me your uncle died twenty years ago."
May you like
The man gave a faint smile.
"That's exactly what the Raven Society wanted everyone to believe."
