Chapter 10 – Beneath Saint Agnes

A cold wind swept across the cemetery surrounding Saint Agnes Church.

The stone building had stood for nearly two centuries, surviving wars, fires, and storms.

Now it guarded another secret.

Alessandro parked beside the iron gates and looked up at the weathered bell tower.

"So this is where Daniel came."

Marco nodded.

"And where Arthur believed the ledger is hidden."

Sophia climbed out of the second SUV with Emma asleep in her arms.

"I don't like this," she whispered.

"It feels like someone is watching us."

Marco glanced around the empty churchyard.

He had the same feeling.

Father Michael met them at the entrance.

His face was drawn with exhaustion.

"I heard about Arthur."

Alessandro nodded silently.

The old priest lowered his head.

"He carried those secrets for most of his life."

"Did he ever tell you about a ledger?" Marco asked.

Father Michael hesitated.

"Only once."

"And?"

"He said if evil ever became too powerful..."

"...the truth would have to rise from beneath the church."

The priest led them through the sanctuary.

Morning sunlight streamed through stained-glass windows, painting brilliant colors across the worn wooden pews.

Emma slowly opened her eyes.

She looked toward the altar.

Then toward the bell tower.

"The bells."

Sophia smiled gently.

"You remember them?"

Emma nodded.

"Daddy said..."

"...listen when they ring."

At that exact moment—

The church bells began to toll.

Ten slow chimes echoed through the valley.

Emma suddenly slipped from her mother's arms and ran toward the side chapel.

"Emma!" Sophia called.

The little girl ignored her.

She stopped before an old marble statue of Saint Agnes.

Then she pointed to the floor.

"Here."

Marco knelt beside the stone tiles.

At first glance, nothing looked unusual.

Then he noticed faint scratches around one square slab.

Someone had lifted it before.

He called two security officers.

Together, they pried the heavy stone upward.

Beneath it was a narrow iron ladder disappearing into darkness.

A hidden chamber.

Father Michael stared in disbelief.

"I've served here for thirty-five years..."

"I never knew."

Flashlights cut through the darkness as Alessandro and Marco descended first.

The air below was cool and dry.

Ancient brick walls surrounded a small underground room.

Shelves lined one side, holding dusty boxes and forgotten church records.

At the center stood an old wooden chest bound with rusted iron straps.

Marco carefully opened it.

Inside lay a thick black ledger.

Wrapped in oilcloth to protect it from moisture.

Across the cover, embossed in faded gold letters, were two words.

Raven Accounts.

Alessandro slowly turned the first page.

Every entry was handwritten.

Dates.

Names.

Amounts of money.

Next to many names...

One chilling word:

Resolved.

Marco frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Father Michael answered quietly.

"It means the problem was eliminated."

The pages listed judges.

Police chiefs.

Business executives.

Politicians.

Doctors.

Every payment meticulously recorded.

Every bribe.

Every death.

Then Alessandro froze.

One familiar name appeared.

Lucia Duca.

His aunt.

Payment received:

$2,000,000.

Reason:

Family cooperation.

Alessandro's hands began to tremble.

"No..."

Marco took the ledger.

A second name appeared just below it.

Isabella Moretti.

Reason:

Witness surveillance.

Then another.

Victor Haines.

Reason:

Medical certification.

The ledger was everything Arthur had promised.

It exposed the entire network.

Suddenly—

A faint click echoed through the chamber.

Marco's head snapped upward.

"Everyone back!"

Too late.

The iron ladder slammed upward on its own.

The entrance sealed shut.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Sophia screamed from above.

"Alessandro!"

Marco rushed to the ladder.

Locked.

From the outside.

Someone had trapped them underground.

Above the chamber, Aunt Lucia stood beside the sealed entrance.

Her warm grandmotherly smile was gone.

In her hand was a remote control.

She pressed a single button.

Somewhere beneath the church...

A timer began counting down.

09:59

She looked toward Isabella, who had been waiting silently near the chapel door.

"It's done."

Isabella nodded.

"And the child?"

Lucia glanced toward Emma.

The little girl was staring directly at her.

Without fear.

Without confusion.

Just... recognition.

Emma quietly whispered,

"You're the bird lady."

For the first time in decades...

Lucia's expression cracked.

She realized the child remembered far more than anyone had imagined.

She turned to Isabella.

"Leave no witnesses."

The two women disappeared through the side entrance just as the timer beneath the church continued its relentless countdown.

09:12... 09:11... 09:10...

Deep underground, Marco heard the faint electronic beeping.

May you like

He looked at Alessandro.

"We don't have much time."
