Chapter 19 - THE LAST NAME IN THE LEDGER

The basement confession destroyed the Vance empire in forty-eight hours.
Conrad Vance was charged with conspiracy, obstruction, bribery, evidence tampering, and multiple financial crimes.
Arthur Mercer faced a separate list twice as long.
Patrick Sloan agreed to cooperate.
Evan surrendered voluntarily.
Cordelia was formally charged for assaulting Della.
No family attorney could erase it anymore.
But Arthur's final words infected every victory.
I'm not the Architect.
Detective Ellis spent two nights examining the ledger.
On the third morning, she called Della and Luca to the station.
Owen came too.
The three of them sat around a table that would have seemed impossible weeks earlier.
Luca.
The man Della had saved eight years ago.
Owen.
The man carrying a secret that nearly destroyed their future.
And Della.
The waitress everyone had assumed possessed the least power.
Mara placed the ledger beneath a camera.
"Most names are real."
"Most?"
"Some are codes."
She turned toward the final page.
One symbol appeared repeatedly.
A simple black triangle.
Della frowned.
"What does it mean?"
"We don't know."
Luca leaned closer.
"Payments?"
"Instructions."
Mara pointed toward one entry.
FULTON FAILURE.
TRIANGLE REQUESTS SECOND ATTEMPT.
Another.
A. MORETTI DEATH.
NO ACTION REQUIRED.
Another.
HALE DISCOVERY.
TRIANGLE ORDERS CONTAINMENT.
Owen stared.
"So Mercer took orders."
"Apparently."
"From who?"
Mara turned another page.
"That's what we're trying to determine."
Luca noticed faint writing near the spine.
"Hold on."
Forensic technicians examined it.
A removed page had left pressure marks.
They enhanced the image.
Four words slowly appeared.
FOUNDATION BOARD.
FOUNDING MEMBER.
Della looked up.
"The Vance Foundation?"
Mara nodded.
"There were seven founding board members."
"Conrad?"
"Yes."
"Arthur?"
"Yes."
"And the others?"
Mara placed six photographs across the table.
Most were elderly.
Two were dead.
Three were retired.
The seventh photograph made Luca stand.
"No."
Della looked at him.
A woman smiled from the photograph.
Elegant.
Dark hair.
Pearls around her neck.
"Who is she?"
Luca could not answer.
Owen looked confused.
Mara said it quietly.
"Elena Moretti."
Della turned toward Luca.
"Your mother?"
He nodded.
"But you said she died six years ago."
"She did."
Mara slid another document forward.
"According to her death certificate."
Luca stared.
"What does that mean?"
"We checked the cemetery records."
His face changed.
Mara continued.
"Her burial vault was opened this morning under court order."
Della's stomach tightened.
"What did they find?"
Mara looked directly at Luca.
May you like
"Nothing."
His mother had never been inside the grave.
